It seems to me like one of those decisions where 50% of VAR teams would give the penalty and 50% would overturn it. How do you fairly judge a situation like that?
All that’s needed is this “we’ve checked the on field decision and we believe it’s worth you having a look from another angle”.
It’s not making the ref look bad, it’s just about giving the referee some more tools. It took one view on a mobile on the ground to see it wasn’t clearcut and worthy of a look from the replays.
Or, bin VAR off entirely and just run the game with the on field decision only.
It’s a dive, book him
Sheer incompetence/ unprofessionalism
Wolves fan, obviously biased but I can see why the ref blew up initially but VAR should have the power to look and immediately say no ref, play on. I watch and play rugby and the TMO has a delayed feed aswell as a live one, they can refer a ref back or correct any decisions quite sharpish and if VAR had that then this would have been resolved before. It is clear and obvious when reviewed, the change I would make is “clear and obvious” shouldn’t apply to penalties or foul decisions and it should be “has there been foul play” for this situation. Therefore the ref has to look and it’s not up to the VAR official. Here’s a simple format for decisions:
Offside=has there been a clear and obvious mistake?
Handballs=is there a clear and obvious handball contact?
Fouls=has there been foul play, ref reviews in person
Penalties=has there been foul play, ref reviews in person
Who cares about clear and obvious ref error based on what the ref saw… we have the ability to come to the correct decision, so it should have been reached it’s frustrating, as a United fan conceding handballs knowing we never got a blatant one at spurs that was clearer, JUST MAKE THE CALL AS ITS WRITTEN IN THE RULE BOOK
I don’t think it’s about whether the referee is crap, it’s about the shitshow that is PGMOL and how they are instructing referees to use VAR.
They to simplify and clarify this ‘clear and obvious error’ rule. At the moment is doesn’t make much sense, because it’s when the decision is tight that the ref needs as much help as possible.
Yes, no pen
Wolves have had so many bad VAR decisions go against them from the first match against ManU and again tonight. Too many to be by chance. Makes me think the ref and VAR are corrupt.
I think VAR is a good idea but it doesn’t work in any way
Well it’s not a good idea then is it? Not in its curent form
As a Newcastle fan, I think it’s a very soft penalty. There is very minor contact. I’d be fuming if it was given against us.
Although some blame does need to be put on Hwang’s side as he glances and sees Schar in his vision, but still decides to take a wild swing in the penalty area after miscontroling it.
The ref probably said to the VAR team - I know he didn’t mean it but he did take the legs of the Newcastle player. I think VAR was just checking if there was contact or not.
He did look like he stopped but he’d still done enough for it to be deemed a foul.
Very harsh. The Newcastle player did look for it too. But it still is what it is. If the Wolves player didn’t swing his leg the Newcastle player could have passed the ball and it could have led to a goal or a shot on goal.
Harsh, but correct in my opinion.
If it’s not clear and obvious then the onfield decision must stand, that’s been the “selling point” of VAR since before it was introduced when there were some justified fears that games would be over-officiated.
If they use VAR to retroactively assign red cards to players who obviously dove or committed other types of fakery, then these occurrences of questionable embellishment will reduce significantly cos less players will want to risk a 3 game ban and the reputation label.
If everyone is in agreement that it was an error, using the benefit of replays, how is it not clear and obvious?
