    Additional hilarity: The German Federal government, i.e. the jurisdiction under which Ursula von der Leyen resides, would be directly affected. They literally have their own Mastodon server: https://social.bund.de/. It _will_have to support the KIDS Act, regardless of whether or not kids (or anyone who isn’t part of or tied to the German Federal government) can make an account there.

    They should address to Uschi and tell her that if they can’t implement what she wants with taxpayers’ money, then thousands of spare-time, hobbyist admins can’t possibly implement it with their own money either.

    The German Green Party has its own Mastodon server, too: https://gruene.social/.

    The German public broadcast service has one: https://ard.social/.

    But corporate Germany is stuck in the early 1990s technologically. Most politicians are stuck in the 1980s at best. And many want to go back at least to the mid-1960s.

    The quoted proposals in the article, where they touch on privacy and security, only talk about keeping children safe from other users NOT from the service provider itself. So selling children’s data to advertisers is not affected?

    Service providers will have identified the child quite precisely if they have had to request proof of age, making their data even more valuable.

        What makes you think that? And what makes you think the next Congress is gonna be better? You guys keep electing idiots to all levels of your government. Think the next batch will not try to overreach?

        Sorry that sounded like I’m attacking you. Bit my intent. I just wanna l wanted to say that I don’t think your current or next Congress would act in a smart way, they mostly act in a convenient way.

          No, I don’t think the next Congress will be better, but at least procedurally the expiration of Congress is a hurdle to getting it done very soon. Not so in the EU.
