At my first professional programming job workspace was tight so I was given a desk in the server room. This room was kept at 59°F because mainframes that the company didn’t even have any more required it. It sucked – I had to wear fingerless Oliver Twist gloves all day. I blame the cold for my executing a DELETE query without a WHERE clause on the production database. “Why is this taking so long?” I muttered through blue lips.

I swear to god, every time I encounter a straggler machine that never upgraded from Win10 to Win11 - it runs faster and more stable than newer and beefier PCs with 11. Insane.

Don’t even get me started on making 4GB of RAM perfectly usable just by installing Mint XFCE. Switch to Linux wherever you possibly can.

Even when 11 came out, it was a decent bit heavier. I did back to back Geekbench runs on 10 and 11. 10 was a decent bit faster. 11 used a gb more ram too.

For anyone else who didn’t know

// Get Picotron for Windows, Mac & Linux ($19.99)

Picotron is a Fantasy Workstation: a self-contained creative environment built for imaginary hardware. Create and share cute Lua apps that can run on the Picotron desktop, be shared as cartridge files, or exported as stand-alone HTML and binary distributables.

      try

      It costs money.

I tried something (‘multiplayer demo’, I suspect outdated/barebones export) and it has some neat stuff, the official demo doesn’t work though (Picotron Playground is resting.).

      more subjective

I’m really interested in 3-digit hex colors (12-bit-RGB) and it seems like something like this would use it. I’m working on my own palette that’s currently 49 colors (7x7) so I guess it would fit here as its own palette or maybe even in the 32 empty slots with some reworking.

That said, I’m not big on the pixel (or even rectilinear voxel) workflow/aesthetic though (more for polygons, 2D and 3D) though I know that probably eliminates most options.

It only costs money to unlock the developer tools. There are tons of projects you can try for free on the website.

3D graphics are possible, and the developer is adding tweaks in the next update to make n64/ps1-era 3d graphics more of a possibility
