Hi team!
All electronics have failure rates, sometimes as high as 5%. I don’t know what the SteamDeck has in terms of PPM, but I do know that if you contact Steam, they will take care of the defect.
Posting your hardware defects here is not doing anything helpful as only steam can take care of the issue. It also is the squeaky wheel syndrome where people are starting to think that most of the new OLED decks are shipping with defects.
Likewise it just creates noise in the sub as it is flooded with ‘my deck has this issue’ and really we should just hear about it if steam won’t take care of the defect.
I mean asking the community for help is more than appropriate, but if it’s clearly a hardware defect, just let steam know and you’ll have a brand new replacement before to long in most cases.
I love Valve’s Steam Deck Globe Room
P.S. The Deck in the image is inside of a globe with Steam Deck’s all around it that exists at Valve’s office. You can see this in some of their video content they’ve published recently.
yes products have failures, look at the ROG ally with SD card port failure. But the Steamdeck LE OLED seems to be from what I’ve heard, that Steam chose a cheaper screen from a different manufacturer to offset costs. If this is true, this means that Valve’s “cutting costs” costs the end user, which, IF true, isn’t cool. That and how long Steam support is taking to respond. I want support to email me back quicker than the 24 hours I’ve been waiting currently, especially with what we paid for it. That and I saw another user say he was quoted 3 1/2 weeks for a replacement at the earliest date. IF true, that’s super shitty customer service and should not be tolerated at this price point.
The “different manufacturer” which I’m only going to call “not Samsung” because nobody cares, has been making quality panels for years, and you almost undoubtedly have devices in your home with panels made by them.
It’s not about price, it’s about supply.
I would say its more about quality control than anything else. Clearly something has gone wrong or been overlooked in the “non samsung” manufacturer or valve’s supply chain for the LE. I think thats what people are more annoyed about and the discussion about quality would have quickly died away or been much smaller if these displays weren’t shipping with dead pixels.
3.5 weeks sounds about right compared to the RMA on my OG 512 that had an issue (I was a first rounder then too). I also thought the BOE screen sourcing was to ensure supply chain issues were mitigated, not for cost cutting? Is there a source on it being specifically for costs vs just redundant sourcing? I haven’t been keeping up.
All that said, I’m lucky this time around since my LE seems great out of the box. My OG was #literallyunplayable (I think my old post is still up showing my video of Witcher 3 breaking) so I’m happy that I got a good one this time around, but I totally feel for folks that have to go through the RMA route; it’s a huge pain and very frustrating.
I have the headphone jack static issue. I want to know what’s causing it before deciding on if a return is needed. What should I do? Just message them and ask about it?
There is known unsatisfactory rate for ALL restaurants… contact restaurant not post on Yelp or Google reviews. You are just making noise on Yelp.
If the mods were worth their salt, they’d get rid of the redundant shipping and defect posts, but of course, they won’t.
It’s the inconsistency of what they remove that frustrates me.
Yeah, they’re extremely inconsistent. They also have a habit of deleting cristism of them, no matter how tame.
They desperately need an OLED defect mega thread with a Google doc/poll to try and keep it all contained. Plus it would be a much more useful resource for people looking for defects to check for themselves.
They also need an OLED unboxing mega thread. Not having those two things has turned the sun into almost entirely those two posts for the last week.
In their defense, if they delete posts about defects or shipping issues they’re gonna get a bunch of angry redditors screaming about censorship and shilling for Valve and whatnot
Maybe, but the keyword here is redundant. There’s just no need for multiple threads, every day, for known defects.
Agreed. We need “my oled steam deck sucks” and “my oled steam deck is great” megathreads… let those two threads battle it out.
FWIW, I think the recent changes with regards to Reddit’s APIs have made moderation a lot harder, since third party tools that mods relied on no longer work.
I could be wrong, but that was a big part of the discussion around the API pricing changes at the time they were announced, not sure if anything changed substantially about Reddit’s approach to pricing since then, but I do feel like this sub has become less well-moderated since around that period.
Agreed, it’s definitely a mod issue. Nobody wants these content and yet here we are
If you are going to say that, at least provide the link to support: https://help.steampowered.com/wizard/HelpWithSteamDeck
I’ll play devil’s advocate here in saying that there is some value added with such threads by reducing unnecessary RMAs, as well as gathering information from a larger sample size of affected individuals who have the same issue(s) to identify certain patterns and/or root causes. Both can potentially help Valve if users direct them to such threads and such.
I get what you’re saying and I know it’s annoying to have a million different threads about the same problem. Maybe weekly bug report/hardware issue megathreads can be created for this purpose. And any additional info gathering polls and such from affected users can also be posted with mod approval.
I agree but since we dont have actual stats, these posts just provide fearmongering.
They really do, been seeing a lot of people afraid to even buy an OLED because of a loud minority of OLED owners.
Making a public fuss forces corporations to do things.
I’m not feeling all that excited about trusting Steam right now. The current shipping fiasco has make me a little less tolerant.
Don’t forget that people with issues are gonna be louder, and not everyone is in this sub. I doubt there’s actually a significant shipping fiasco going on - rather there’s more discussion here than real world.
At least in the UK/EU, it’s a disaster. Maybe less so in other regions - I haven’t been following those.
I dont think your perspective is accurate.
Ah, yes. The shipping fiasco of them not being able to teleport it into our hands fully charged immediately upon the order going through.
Mine have a black screen since it’s arrived home … Stiller waiting rma.
steam support is awesome. they will replace your unit if anything is wrong.
But if there’s more posts then I can show my wife said posts and I can “make” sure it works before Christmas
Only 5%? The launch Xbox 360 had a 70% failure rate IIRC 🫠
Alternatively, the “I got an OLED and it’s just fine” threads are getting pretty stupid too.
This sub sure is interesting…lol
Well now we’ve officially moved into the “posts about how annoying all the repeat posts are” phase, so we’re making pRoGreSS!
Nah more like the threads “Which game is the best OLED game”, “What are your favorite HDR Games” …
Should I buy a steam deck?
Give me financial advice without knowing anything valuable about my situation.
I’ve always taken those threads as “I really want one but haven’t been able to creatively justify it for myself, so I’m hoping some rando on the Internet can do that for me.”
It’s a universal cycle. A big name product/game/movie/whatever gets released and it becomes An Event™. People get excited and want to be part of it because our brains are wired to crave community. We have an experience with the thing and go to seek out others to share and amplify that experience. At that point one of two things happen:
- We find others that had a similar experience, and we we feed off the positive feedback loop until we look silly.
- We find others that have a different experience, and the cognitive dissonance is painful to us, so we lash out at them.
It’s ok to like something. It’s ok to not like something. It’s ok to enjoy just being part of something even if you have no strong feelings about the thing. It’s all normal and valid. Just don’t confuse that dopamine rush for your actual identity, and don’t attack other people who don’t have the same experience.
I appreciate the posts discussing defects as it helped me know what to look out for. I would not have checked if my panel was dead pixel free if not for the posts here.
They need a megathread of known defects not 300 posts over a week with different levels of accurate and useful/not useful information.
understanding that lots of posts about a hardware issue doesn’t equal a huge widespread issue is a canon event we all must go through. The reason I do not fret about oled problems despite the posts is because of the past examples of this happening.
i thought we had learned by now that this sub is 90% either the same well discussed issue posted 14 times already today, or pictures of newly delivered steam decks
