A lot of people hate on “NPC” colors like white, black, grey, and I’ve even heard blue.
I think there’s nothing more “NPC” than to pick a different (and sometimes ugly) color just for the sake of being different. It reeks of “I need to feel special”. If you love a specific yellow or green on your car that’s great but if you’re just doing it to avoid having an “NPC” color, you’re the NPC.
I know this post will be unpopular because the r/cars take is “grey bad!” so I expect a lot of downvotes by the “actually my Civic is orange because I’m just so exciting as a person totally not boring!” crowd
Over the last few years, this sub has gained a ton of members. And with that, I’ve seen the prevailing sentiments shift towards those that a younger, naive enthusiast would hold.
Plus, social media is rife with people wanting to post the “gottem” takes.
The rationality is starting to go by the wayside.
Buy what you like and enjoy it and ignore the opinion of others.
Every Ferrari I have owned has been painted the same color of medium/dark gray (grigio ferro metallic). I wouldn’t consider any of them boring cars. I don’t care if people want red Ferraris, but I am not going to change to a popular color choice to satisfy anyone.
I just hate shopping for used cars and finding a sea of greyscale
“I’m not boring, you’re boring!”
Sidestepping the NPC concept a bit, I just lament that the road is a less colorful place than it used to be. It’s just much less interesting and it affects everyone’s options. My daily driver is grey because I literally couldn’t find one in another color.
I agree. In general I feel as though most vehicles on the road are the same SUVish looking things. Nothing wrong with picking a “classy” or “safe” color, but it does get boring to see.
White is my preferred color, looks good, hides most dirt, blends in. Dark metallic grey/silver is my second favorite.
With that said if I ever own a dedicated weekend car it will hopefully be yellow or orange.
White…hides dirt?
Grey is dull, but Silver is high on my list.
just for the sake of being different. It reeks of “I need to feel special”.
Depends on the car for me. I like color, but usually the less shout ones: British Racing Green, Dark reds, metallic blues, etc. Neon green or bright red is fine, but I don’t want that much attention.
but Silver is high on my list.
Silver is used to be called the most boring colour, nice to see it having a comeback. My colour is technically called atomic silver but it’s more of a champagne than silver. Love it!
When I was kid, a lot of dream cars debuted with silver as a press color: McLaren F1, Porsche 996 911, Aston Martin Db7, Benz CLK GTR, BMW Nazca C2, etc. Gordon Murray says its good for showing off technical designs and I agree.
I have a ceramic grey car. I wanted that color since it started to get popular a few years back. I absolutely love how those ceramic colors look on most of the cars, even though it is really popular to see, I still like it.
I collect pocket knives and I have a type. I like subdued grays and blues. It’s just a preference and what other people think or like has no bearing on how I spend my money.
I certainly don’t want a car that sticks out to the police or anyone else, but I know many do. Does not bother me in the least that some do.
I wouldn’t hate it as much if it weren’t for the fact that it means out of the 6 colors automakers offer to make the car in you have black, white, 3 different shades of grey, and then a single non-greyscale color option.
I think when I eventually get my next car I’ll just need to factor in the price of getting a grey car wrapped to a color I actually want instead of hunting across the whole country for one.
I own a white pickup truck. Is it a “boring” color? Sure. But that’s the point. I don’t want it to stand out. I don’t want it to stick out like a sore thumb.
Plus as someone that works in construction, I don’t mind it. It matches the other trucks and vans in the fleet and I don’t attract unwanted attention when I have to park in the center median or in other questionable locations. Combine that with my hard hat and safety vest, nobody asked me what I’m doing or why I’m here.
Ironically, a lot of NPC cars in video games are random algorithms of RGB colors. Lime greens. Oranges. Baby blues. Reds. Dijon mustard yellows. Pink. Etc.
Moving on … I think these new pastel/taupe/solid colors are very becoming.
Is it bad to want to be different from everyone else? I was offered a premium 6MT in Halo White but I turned it down because I wanted the flashiness of Neptune Blue. I waited an extra four months for it, but it was so worth it when I look over my office’s parking lot and see my speck of bright blue in a mass of silver, gray, and black.
As someone who owns two cars in the both most commonly complained about colors on this contentious subreddit (GMC Tri-Coat White and BMW Dravit Grey), I really dont care what people think at this point. Cars are tools and those two colors hide dirt, bugs, and rock chips better than all the crazy colors.
I have even had an enthusiast criticize me for picking the two most “boring colors” to my face while the guy has a BRZ in some revolting wrap thats coming off and his Pallisade is grey too. I just said “whatever dude” and disregarded his opinion. Calling someone an NPC because the color of the car you think is too basic is a problem with them, not you.
cars are tools
you’re in the wrong subreddit, friend. cars are love. cars are life.
you sure do seem mad that people think your car color choice is boring as fuck
I think you’re missing the point a lot of people make.
A 1998 Camry, a “boring” car, had 10 color options, not just black, white, silver and gray (and maybe one blue). Today, so many cars have a limited color palette it’s a shame. You may not like them, but the option to get a variety of reds, greens, blues, etc. was neat.
