The Mudryk goal was a fluke AND an error.
At the point Mudryk hits the cross, Raya is about 4-5 yards of his line (which is fine) but well outside his near post. That is just objectively poor goal keeper positioning.
When the ball is on the wing with a defender marking, keepers should be relatively central in their goal, maybe a yard or 2 towards the near post,as this strikes the right balance of protecting the near post shot and protecting crosses into dangerous areas.
The only thing he’s protecting against in that position there is a near post shot, which is low risk anyway as Saliba is marking Mudryk.
Even if the cross had missed the goal, Raya would never have been able to make it back across from that position to attempt to save from sterling coming in at the back post. In fact he barely made it back inside the goal before the ball was in the net.
I’m not being funny but as someone who played keeper as a kid to a relatively decent level this is Goalkeeper positioning 101 and it’s a huge keeper error to allow a goal like this. The fact it was also a fluke from Mudryk doesn’t take away from the fact it was an error.
Ok well explain why he’s in such a different position for the sterling cross that leads to the handball.
A yard or two inside the near post, 4-5 yards off his line.
His positioning for crosses is generally quite aggressive which is fine because he likes to come for crosses and it’s clearly a deliberate part of his game, but being that far outside his near post for the Mudryk goal means he’s out of the game for anything stood up to the back post.
