Mudryk’s goal was a fluke in that he 100% meant it to be a cross but Raya also made the error of being so far out of his goal in the first place. Had the ball gone to the player at the back post as intended, Raya never would’ve been able to make up the ground.
100% a fluke, he crossed it on the left with his left foot. Typically that type of cross to bend into the goal is not likely, it should bend away from goal.
Mudryk hit the ball wrong which just made it perfectly cross/lob over the keeper. People shitting on Raya because of this are just doing it because
We’re in a unique situation with our keepers so the magnifying glass is on them but every single keeper in the world makes mistakes when playing out the back, frequently. Some mistakes go punished some don’t. Alison who’s hailed as one of the best keepers in the world, makes mistakes. Vicario, who people are rating extremely highly, made a couple mistakes just last night, one with which Willian should probably have punished.
When you play for either Arsenal or Man United you get put under a magnifying glass. Everything you do is overanalysed.
Like Brighton got thrashed 6-1 by Aston Villa and in their next match against Man City pundits/journalist were talking about how De Zerbi could be the next Man City manager etc. Brighton have had some shocking performances this season, but it gets swept under the rug.
Raya is going to keep making those mistakes because his short distribution is not as good as Ramsdale’s. We’ve traded a long distribution problem for a short distribution problem, but I think Arteta figures that Raya’s shot stopping and defending from set pieces will make up for that.
Personally I think Ramsdale was good at defending set pieces until the World Cup when he broke his knuckle and you could see that he couldn’t punch the ball and was hesitating a lot, and as a shot stopper Ramsdale might not be the best but we’ll experience less shots if we’re more comfortable playing out from the back and retaining possession that way. His long distribution was also better when he first joined, I don’t know why he became inconsistent but if he can get that back I think he can earn his place back. What Raya lacks I don’t think he can ever learn - you either know how to pick out the best pass or you don’t, that comes from Ramsdale’s time as a midfielder which Raya will never have.
one of the most ridiculous comments here. Raya completes a higher volume and higher percentage of short passes than Ramsdale. This is a fact you can easily look up so stop spouting shite lol
It was a fluke but Rayas starting position is terrible. Hes literally 3 or 4 yards in front of his front post. If Mudryk crossed it deep he wouldve had to really scramble to get back into position
Watch it back. Pause at the moment Mudryk tries to cross. If you really think thats a good starting position then theres no point even arguing here
At the point Mudryk hits the cross, Raya is about 4-5 yards of his line (which is fine) but well outside his near post. That is just objectively poor goal keeper positioning.
When the ball is on the wing with a defender marking, keepers should be relatively central in their goal, maybe a yard or 2 towards the near post,as this strikes the right balance of protecting the near post shot and protecting crosses into dangerous areas.
The only thing he’s protecting against in that position there is a near post shot, which is low risk anyway as Saliba is marking Mudryk.
Even if the cross had missed the goal, Raya would never have been able to make it back across from that position to attempt to save from sterling coming in at the back post. In fact he barely made it back inside the goal before the ball was in the net.
I’m not being funny but as someone who played keeper as a kid to a relatively decent level this is Goalkeeper positioning 101 and it’s a huge keeper error to allow a goal like this. The fact it was also a fluke from Mudryk doesn’t take away from the fact it was an error.
This is incorrect - any goalkeeper coach in the world would tell you the positioning was fine. Don’t let a fluke send you down a rabbit hole of nonsense just because Neville lost his head
Ok well explain why he’s in such a different position for the sterling cross that leads to the handball.
A yard or two inside the near post, 4-5 yards off his line.
His positioning for crosses is generally quite aggressive which is fine because he likes to come for crosses and it’s clearly a deliberate part of his game, but being that far outside his near post for the Mudryk goal means he’s out of the game for anything stood up to the back post.
These are two completely different instances of play with little to no similarities in terms of the build up to them - hence different positioning. Don’t be dense on purpose please
I’ll keep saying it. Mudryk goal was a fluke - not an error.
The more noticeable error was Raya giving it straight to Palmer in the 2nd half where luckily nothing came from it
Anyone blaming Raya for the Mudryk goal is either a moron or has an agenda.
Yeah I have never seen a keeper blamed for a goal like that before. It is always just accepted as a fluke and people move on.

That wasn’t an error, that’s his playing style, it’s the reason why he’s so much better on crosses than Ramsdale.

Is it just me or is no one really mentioning Brighton who are rotating keepers atm. Feels like that tactic is going way under the radar

Apparently it’s easier and more fun to call out Arteta for lying about wanting to do it than to talk about someone actually doing it.

But, but, this dude played in goal as a child
