My wife’s boss is in his 70s and just got a M340. Age is but a number. If your heart wants a 340, then get a 340.

For the E46, if you take care of the big three (subframe, rod bearings, and vanish), then you should be fine for the long run. Budget about $10k to cover those. Some of this may have been addressed by a previous owner.

M5 but I prefer sedans. I’ve driven both on a track recently and they haul ass. M8 AWD system felt more sophisticated. As a young person, I assume you’ll have friends around so perhaps a car that fits 4 would better match your lifestyle.

The M8 is a great GT car. So if going on cruises / club drives are of importance, then this would be the better choice.

You’ll be happy with either so don’t stress it.

If you’re worried about having spent $10k and nothing to show for it if you sell, that number will only go up the longer you hold on it.

Do you need a car? If it’s just parked, can you put it for rent on Toro? Is there an active BMW CCA chapter where you live? If so, that’s a good way to get miles on it from cruises to other social events.

Here’s the thing about looks, you can’t really see it from the driver’s seat. The new M2 was very fun when I drove at the Performance Center. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one if I were in the market.
