Technology@beehaw.org•Question: Is it possible to put Linux on an x86 Chromebook?
1·14 days agoYou’ll also probably want to bookmark this: https://docs.chrultrabook.com/docs/installing/post-install.html#general-qol-fixes
The Chrultrabook project makes the distro run a bit smoother once it’s installed by providing fixes for the audio stack and custom keyboard layouts to make the top row of keys work properly among other things

Technology@beehaw.org•Question: Is it possible to put Linux on an x86 Chromebook?
6·14 days agohttps://docs.mrchromebox.tech/ provides custom coreboot firmware for a variety of ChromeOS devices. Once you’ve flashed it on your Chromebook, you should be able to just install Linux on it

Technology@beehaw.org•WhatsApp is launching third-party chat support across EU Countries, which means you can now ditch WhatsApp for an EU alternative: BirdyChat from Latvia.English
1·28 days agoThey don’t choose the platform, the platforms choose them. Under EU regulation WhatsApp as a “gatekeeper” has to give access to any other platform operating in the EU if they request it. Threema, Signal and co simply aren’t interested.

21·1 month agoYou could also use dedicated hardware to store your keys. Any FIDO USB key will do. I have a Yubikey that cost me less than 30 bucks.
It’s really handy, because I frequently use someone else’s device for work. All I have to do is plug it in, press the button on the key and enter the master password for the passkey storage. It’s like having a password manager on a USB stick.

3·2 months agoOr if you live in the EU you can just install the “PAL” version which works without a PC connection.
And if you don’t have an unique public IP address, for example because you are behind CGNAT, you can use Pangolin. It tunnels all traffic from your homelab to a VPS via Wireguard and exposes your services via a Traefik reverse proxy. Pangolin also automates the Traefik setup and provides a webui to configure the individual proxies.
For a VPS I recommended ionos, because they offer servers with unlimited traffic starting at only 1€ per month with server locations in both Europe and the US.
I think the main problem is, that it solves a problem, that shouldn’t exist in the first place. If OEMs would build (and ideally also upstream) proper drivers, then we wouldn’t need a translation layer

Gaming@beehaw.org•Confirmed - Electronic Arts (EA) sold off to investors including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund
101·3 months agoAnd one of the other investors is Jared Kushner
This is what I use: https://github.com/fosrl/pangolin
Creates a wireguard connection from your home server to a vps, which then exposes it to the public using a traefik reverse proxy.

2·3 months agoYes, but is there any evidence that Moroccan Oil is an activist company? They were founded by an Israeli, but in Montreal, Canada and are headquartered in New York, USA. They don’t seem to have any direct ties to the Israeli military or government, because they are a haircare company. Companies usually care more about their bottom line than about their government’s agenda (as long as the two don’t collide)
I don’t see how this one’s involvement stops the EBU from kicking out Israel.
