Sounds like your USB-C port is loose.

TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•I shouldn't have checked for dead pixelsEnglish1·2 years agoFWIW, my 512GB OLED Deck arrived and seems flaweless for the most part. There’s a slight clicking when pressing down on the dpad that doesn’t exist when pressing left, right, or up but everything else (so far) seems 100%. No Dead Pixels (didn’t think there would be any since it’s using a Samsung display), and downloaded about 430GB worth of content to really test it out tonight.
LE model as suspected couldn’t be cancelled and is also on the way. If I can catch the delivery driver I’m supposed to tell him to return to sender, else I have to get an RMA number and all that stuff to send back the inferior model. I wonder if new LE batchess will use the Samsung display (hopefully).
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•I shouldn't have checked for dead pixelsEnglish1·2 years agoImagine buying a brand new iPhone or Galaxy and being told by others here that it’s not a big deal, who cares that your expensive item is marred with something no other major device manufacturer would put up with.
Dead pixel, even if only 1… return that sh1t unless you hate money and love mediocracy.
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•I shouldn't have checked for dead pixelsEnglish1·2 years agoBecause the LE is really the “Loser” Edition. Can’t have the truth about the LE build quality and screen issues take away from potential sales. Valve doesn’t want to sell the 512GB OLED models, they want to sell the 1TB units as the have more mark up.
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•I shouldn't have checked for dead pixelsEnglish1·2 years agoYou have to remember Reddit is really a market driven company. Any major subreddit like this will be monitored by Valve staff (or wannabe staff) and will gleefully remove anything that paints them in a negative light. THis happened to the Legion Go subreddit as well. Same type of BS mods there to protect the corporation rather than the consumer.
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•Valve: Please update Steam OS to allow us to control the power/charging LED!English1·2 years agoThat’s not a solution, that’s a band-aid. They need to adjust the power to the LED (let the user define it). Hopefully they included the necessary hardware to do this via software.
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•Let's check if you have Samsung or BOE OLED panel inside your DeckEnglish1·2 years agoWhat, you don’t like to run “rm -rf /” daily?
(this is dangerous, don’t do this, it was joke so this is warning for the truly literal here).
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•I shouldn't have checked for dead pixelsEnglish1·2 years agoI guess the good news here is there should be plenty of “Limited Edition” factory refurbished OLED models sooner rather than later :)
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•I shouldn't have checked for dead pixelsEnglish1·2 years agoThank you! It’s like yes, Valve is a great company! But it’s still a “for profit” company that makes a shed load of profit. These issues didn’t happen with the LCD deck launch so there’s no excuses here really. They didn’t do enough QC before shipping them out.
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•Let's check if you have Samsung or BOE OLED panel inside your DeckEnglish1·2 years agoFlickering (for some) can cause headaches and other issues like eye fatigue (even non visible).
This is a well know fact that anyone who’s sat under flourecent lights for a prologed period of time can attest to.

TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•Let's check if you have Samsung or BOE OLED panel inside your DeckEnglish1·2 years agoI just think someone at Vavle in marketing thought it would be a good idea to time this “themed” release with the new Half Life 1 refresh and convinced Gaben to do it. Vavle wouldn’t have been able to meet the demand at the “good” factory making the 512/1GB normal OLED models so they farmed out the manufacturing to someone else to handle the LE models as this LE plan was only only green lit a few months ago. This would also explain why you can still order the “Limited” edition model as they appear to be making them on order (after the initial lot was cleared out) and hence the 1-2 weeks timeframe (which is really 2 - 4 weeks since the first lot sold out).
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•Let's check if you have Samsung or BOE OLED panel inside your DeckEnglish1·2 years agoThis is correct. If the BOE screens turn out to be a real problem, Valve should be offering LE early adopters an exchange for a good screen free of charge. Send it in, they replace it and send you back one with a proper screen. And then drop BOE as a supplier or sue them if they are in breach of contract. Valve has a reputation to keep, this isn’t helping.
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•LE owners: How's PWM compared to the LCD deck?English1·2 years agoThe BOE screen at 90hz is running slightly faster than the Samsung model which may indicate the screen could be driven harder (overclock better?), but given the QC issues, I wouldn’t be so keep on get one. Both OLED screens suffer from PWM but that also mitigates a lot of the motion blur associated with the LCD displays. I’ve no doubt the PWM/flickering will be noticeable at lower refersh rates for sensitive people like myself, but I’d take some flicker over the atrocious LCD G2G response times (up to 10x slower during pixel transitions) on the OG deck or heck, any other LCD based handheld.
ONCE I get my hands on both, I can perform the tests your’re asking about but I suspect you’ll find out the answer before I can compare them directly.
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•[Megathread] Steam Deck OLEDEnglish1·2 years agoThe LCD still has a few advantages (not many) over the OLED model. It is consierably less money and performs within 5% of the OLED. Battery life while not great is much better than the “competition” especially at lower wattage gaming (how these should be played). The outer shell (haven’t confirmed this 100% yet) on the new OLED model appears to be thinner/weaker likely to reduce overall weight (only 30G difference). So the durability of the LCD could be better. There’s also no worry about screen burn in or crazy mirror like reflections. The most recent 3.5.5 update incorporated many fixes making the “old” LCD models feel much snappier, and the LCD screen color has been fixed where it just looks good now, not amazing, but good! I’d also argue the audio is louder on the older LCD models even if a little less accurate sounding. Some prefer this (I do). If I want better precision I’ll wear headphones.
tldr;
If you don’t want to spend so much on the OLED, the LCD model is still a really good deal (compared to anything else in this price range especially). If you can afford the OLED model though, there’s enough improvements or enough of an argument to at least go with the 512GB model as you gain all the other stuff,
TheHumanConscience@alien.topBtoSteam Deck@hardware.watch•[Megathread] Steam Deck OLEDEnglish1·2 years agoMy 512GB unit finally shipping. Currently in Memphis, TN. Expected Friday afternoon. Really hope it comes in time for the long weekend. 1TB LE model still not shipped.
I’d suggest an external monitor like a 16" 144hz 2560x1600 to keep the same 16:10 aspect ratio between the Deck and the external monitor. Add some 4" Edifier bookshelf speakers and a good docking station and you’ll be good to go.
