It’s getting a limited release two years after the Rivian R1T release. The latter has a drag coefficient of 0.3 and a tow capacity of 11,000 pounds. The Cybertruck is rumored to start at 33% more than the R1T, and only the top of the line version can match the much smaller and cheaper R1T in towing capacity. It also has a high drag coefficient of 0.39 and a rumored battery capacity of 250-ish miles.
What wheels do you have on your car? Turbine wheels can reduce your range by as much as 15%, and the pre-2019 Teslas do not have heat pumps. 85 km in the winter seems insane, though. The warranty explicitly stated that the car should at the very most lose 30% within 8 years.
My Xpeng loses maybe 20% in - 10 degrees.
I get the impression that many who say Tesla have never owned another EV, and are coming from an 11 years old Honda Accord or a 14 year old Audi A4 with cloth seats.
I owned a Tesla for many years. Horrible service. You can’t drive your car home until the service bill has been paid. You can’t split the bill into smaller pieces and pay later either. Really fun when your air suspension, DU or battery dies. When something goes wrong, the broken part is replaced with a poorly remanufactured part and not a new one.
The people who rant about FUD, should try owning a Tesla post-warranty.
BMW has excellent service. So does MG, Xpeng and Toyota.
Depends on where you live. If it’s the Bible belt, then I agree. A Rex for the EV would also get the job done.
The new Mercedes-Benz batteries are seemingly a lot more reliable than the old Tesla-derived batteries. While we can’t know 100% yet, some “old” electric B classes died after a few months.
Is it possible to have the car towed to a 3. party workshop? While I realize that the US has large distances and a scattered population, the cells themselves are probably intact. In all likelyhood, we’re talking a bad circuit board, a couple of joints that need to be re-soldered due to corrosion or bad wires. An EV service center can probably fix this, although that won’t be cheap either.
Not really. A Volvo is cheaper to maintain than a Tesla. Hyundai and Kia too. Buy cheap, buy twice.
Tesla is filling the battery packs with foam to make then unrepairable.
A Volvo XC40 is fairly expensive. It’s a premium car and you get what you pay for, but people would rather buy a cheap car now and deal with expensive repairs later.
Not like in 2008. Even boring new cars like the Prius had tires that looked like gaffs tape wrapped around an alloy wheel back then.
Toyota and BMW are fine examples. While some here love to hate Toyota because of a few vehicles being recalled in Texas, the bz4x has a ten year / one million km warranty in Europe. The battery is also serviceable. If the entire battery pack needs replacement on the warranty, the owner gets a completely new battery pack and not a reman.
Cars that can’t do anything without an iPad in the center is a fad that will die eventually, like the extremely low-profile tires everyone had in 2008.
This is how I felt when I test drove the MG ZS Ev and Tesla Model S in 2020. The latter became a shitty car that needed expensive repairs once the warranty expired, but it was fun, and the drivability and comfort was amazing. It had a little more wheel noise than a 5-series or A6, but I learned to live with that.
The MG5 and MG ZS EV don’t have the latest bells and whistles, but their batteries handle cold winters really well, the cars are safe, and theh are reliable. Furthermore, the batteries are serviceable and modules can be replaced individually.
Teslas, or exotics like the Porsche Taycan are expensive to insure. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is expensive repairs, and the second is that going from a ten year old Honda Civic to a family sedan with almost 500 horsepowers takes some “relearning”. High performance Chinese EVs that are still cheap to repair, are also cheap to insure in Europe
Most EVs hold their value well. Infamously unreliable, but fun cars tend to depreciate a lot once they’re nearing their end of warranty. EVs famous for their reliability, such as the e-Golf, MG ZS Ev or BMW i3 have held up extremely well where I live

True. To be fair, I was also a Tesla Stan once. All the stories were “anecdotes” that wouldn’t happen to me. One drive unit and the battery failed on the warranty. The other DU also failed on the warranty.
The new owner is experiencing battery problems now. 🤡 I sold the car cheaply “as is” and warned him that this could happen anytime, though.
To be fair, it was indeed a cheap car to own while under warranty, apart from the insurance.
It’s an interesting car, but are the advertised stats true? It’s an electric crew cab truck measuring 526 cm long, with a range of 600 km, two motors with 400PS, AWD and a weight of merely 1660 kg (the same as a diesel-powered compact executive). Sounds a little “too good to be true” with that weight, even if Geely has become a respectable brand.
Finally, Tesla doesn’t outsource almost anything
They still outsource battery cells. Also, the quality of the old, outsourced Brembo brakes and Continental suspensions were far higher than those in a new Tesla. Many Continental air suspensions from 2013 are good as new after 250,000 km, which is a feat even Porsche and Audi will struggle to beat. Nowadays, air suspension failures in the S and X happen allt he time once the five year warranty is expired.
Teslas frequent software updates do more harm than good, and the updates often have bugs in them.
Good point. I think the sedans are more popular in the US than in Europe, though. Coupe SUVs are all the rage in Europe.
I also think it’s location dependent. Audi dealerships in Norway (Møller Bil) aren’t very good. BMW dealerships (Bavaria) are really good, though.
