I hear a lot about the various EVs on the market and their drivetrain/software/ride quality but I rarely hear about the quality of service that comes post-purchase. Perhaps because it’s not an exciting topic.
Which brand would y’all say has the best or worst reputation in the regard? How would you say Chevy compares to Tesla or Hyundai?
I bought a Kia Sorento PHEV last year and every time a warning light came on that needed to be dealt with by the dealer (important things like “hybrid system failure”) they told me they couldn’t even look at it for 2-3 weeks. The last time I was 250 miles from home so I traded it for a Toyota BZ4X. So far Toyota has been great and the one time I had a warning light they looked at it and I had it back within 4 hours.
I ordered an electric VW in the summer of 2022. They quoted me 3 months for delivery. Then the chip shortage started. Then the war in Ukraine started. When three months passed the dealership called me and offered a loaner vehicle for free until I got my car. They gave me a free car for 9 months. That was service.
Wow. That’s really above and beyond
Damn! That’s unbelievable! Were you a previous customer or something?
It was weird. This was my first time leasing a car in Germany and when I went to the dealership to talk to the guy and price it out we basically did the configurator online. He printed it out and said okay. This is everything. This is the price. (Same as when I did it online at home) and we ordered it. No extra bullshit was pushed on me. On delivery day everything was ready. No surprise charges or fees. I was in and out in less than 20 mins. The dealership was Riemer Autohaus in Mölln. It takes me 1.5 hours to drive there, but they have always had exceptional service.
The war in Ukraine started in early spring 2022, so before summer 2022. Something is off. Chip shortage also sound like late 2020/whole 2021/early 2022, rather than late 2022
I almost can’t believe it considering our experiences with their customer support lines. Mind you, our closest dealerships might just be garbage.
Wow, that’s incredible! What dealer? They should all be like that.
Riemer Autohaus in Mölln Germany.
Oh, that makes sense. This would never happen in the US. 😒
Wow, that’s seriously impressive. Did you end up getting your VW?
Hyundai EV - okay okay. They don’t know the tech side of it properly. However they suck at non- tech part like fixing the rear hatch strut etc.
I had Mercedes E350 4Matic sedan in the past with extended warranty and it was pretty good of a service they provided.
I had a small non-EV related issue with my bolt euv and the nearby Chevy dealer helped me pretty good.
In my opinion, Tesla has a leg-up again because of the direct-to-consumer model. My '23 Niro has 600 miles on it and the touchscreen is acting up sometimes, I wanted to bring it in to a Kia dealership to have someone look at it. Next appointment available is mid-december and they would need my car for the whole day without the guarantee of a loaner…
I think this is a tough question. With our Ford(Mach-e) , dealership was excellent with service.
With our VW(ID.4), one dealership was useless and kept pushing me off while another dealership was friendly, quick, and had great service
And with our mini (just the plug in hybrid for now) both dealerships we dealt with were stellar, and each recommend the other if we needed.
Seconding this experience with Mini. I particularly enjoy their attempts at upselling me by always giving me a loaner nicer (sportier) than my own car.
We never get a better model, since we need a 4 door (carseats) they always give us the base model 4 door Cooper.
I guess I’ve been lucky. I drive an SE and the sent me off in a JCW model last time I needed to drop mine off for service.
^^^ This person MINIs.
Tesla, their mobile service is top notch, same with SC
Porsche
lol why does it trigger you? Tesla has been the best for me and others that have posted.
you clearly haven’t owned any cars with actual service before
Lmao. Keep crying. Your tears won’t change our experiences.
I get the impression that many who say Tesla have never owned another EV, and are coming from an 11 years old Honda Accord or a 14 year old Audi A4 with cloth seats.
All the “by far the most comfortable car I’ve ever driven” posts definitely prove this.
I went from a 16 year old Accord and rave about my Leaf’s comfort, so I probably shouldn’t be talking…
This effect makes it really hard to tell what’s what.
When people complain about “cheap materials” and cosmetic defects in M3’s, it’s hard to tell whether they are comparing to luxury cars or to 15 year old cars with crank windows and manual locks.
I’ve owned a string of new BMWs and Audis before moving to Tesla. This is location dependent but the Audi and BMW dealers in NoVA are straight garbage. Horrible customer service and they refuse to diagnose rattles/creaks.
Haven’t had that experience at any of my local Tesla service centers…

I also think it’s location dependent. Audi dealerships in Norway (Møller Bil) aren’t very good. BMW dealerships (Bavaria) are really good, though.
My i4 is my third BMW (first two were ICE) but BMW service has been consistently good, for me. I’m sure not everyone has the same experience and it depends on the individual dealership, but I’ve been very happy.
This question cannot be asked by “brand” if that brand offers a dealership model. The dealer to dealer experience varies so wildly.
Tesla mobile service is great.
Chevy Bolt 2020. Took in for warranty repair and screw in one of the tires. Service tech said I needed two new tires to the tune of $750, as they don’t plug them. I did a Google search and found the service bulletin on how they do in fact plug these tires. Needless to say, I told them to pound sand, and will not take it back to them. Got another shop to plug the tire. I can buy 4 brand new tire for <$ 800. I was so pissed they I know they pull this shit on people who don’t know any better.
Also had the A/C compressor go out, and it took them a week to get the part to fix the car. Most dealers only have one EV tech, so they have a full load of work.
Have only had one Tesla remote service for installing home link. So far so good. Except the tech didn’t lock my car or tell me they were done with the work. Came out after work to an unlocked car.
Came here to say screw VW. Good luck ID4 drivers. Luckily there are less moving parts than ICEs. I had the joy of dealing with the timing chain tensioners on a VW ICE… known, document, engineering problem they did not proactively replace and instead let tens of thousands of vehicles prematurely drive around with an engine that was playing roulette every day. On top of that, higher maintenance costs, had to explain to them what they needed to do, and more maintenance needs than any car I’ve had since (sensors, trans, timing chain, more frequent intervals, yuck). They can suck my greenwashed dieselgate.
To your question, would agree with other posters. Tesla not the highest reliability ratings but hard to beat the service. The advantage with them is they know EVs better as well, VS other manufacturers where it’s at best an ancillary part of their biz.
OMG the nightmare I had with VW in Toronto over an airbag light in a brand new car. It lasted the whole 4 years of the lease with chapters and acts and dumping it at the dealers so many times while I was away only to come back and that stupid fucking light would light up 250m-4km from the dealers. I love(d) VW cars but that shit drove me crazy.
This will always depend on country and eaven local dealership and the people just in front of you
So Ive has Nissan, Chevy and Tesla EVs/PHEVs.
If you think dealers don’t want to sell EVs, they definitely don’t want to service them. So you run into long, LONG waits for simple repairs.
I love that you can book service with Tesla through the app, my main issues have been tire related and not only do they offer free towing but they came to my driveway and put a loaner wheel on, then came back and put the fixed wheel back on. If they can fix the tire, my SC doesnt even charge anything. Incredible.
I’ve yet to run into any major issues with Tesla yet tho.
Honestly, probably some of the Chinese ones.
