"We work professionally really well together. We push each other in training and there’s days where I come in and I’m down because of the situation and he picks me up. And for whatever reason there might be a day where he’s down and even though I’m suffering and hurting for not playing I have to stand up and be able to push him.”

This headline (along with the billion other examples) is exact reason I never wanted to pursue journalism after (and while) studying it. You’re literally taught to create misleading headlines. And the funny thing is that the headline could read: “Ramsdale Discusses Mindset With Losing His Starting Place” and it would get the exact same readership.

It takes an incredible human being to be able to not only feel and act in this way but to be so honest about his feelings takes balls. Him and El neny really are some of the kindest footballers in existence.

Both can be true though. Ramsdale isnt happy with the situation and its affecting him but he isnt going to be a prick and hate on raya

This. Do people really think he’s gonna come out and slate Raya or Mikel? He’s pissed, and I would be too. But as a professional he’ll just have to keep fighting

When the rumours around Raya started to gain momentum, he said in an interview earlier that he’s been the one to get other keepers benched and was prepared for the chance that he’d get benched.

The headline took a 4 word portion of a sentence that sounds much worse and really does not convey what he was actually saying in that sentence.

Yeah, it’s like they think it’s okay to misrepresent on the basis that we KNOW their headlines are horse shit.

This is a less spectacular side of the post-truth world we live in. It’s all okay for clicks, right? It’s okay to lie to get attention, yes?

It’s pulled out of the middle of a sentence and suggests a different context to what was actually said.

So instead of “we’re professionals and support each other even though it hurts that I’m not starting” which is what he’s said. It reads as “I’m hurting” which is ambiguous and suggestive that there is a bigger problem there.

I hate click bait titles too. Especially, like in this instance, there is no need. What he actually said is incredible interesting to us.

Let’s say after a close game which we won, Arteta said “it was a tough situation but we got the win, so I am happy”, then loads of news sites posted a headline saying “ARSENAL IN TOUGH SITUATION, SAYS ARTETA”.

Yes, those are the words he used, but does that sound like his intent in the comment?

Additionally, Raya also said something similar in an interview with the Athletic:

“The relationship? It’s very good,” adds Raya. “At the end of the day, we are mates, which is the important thing. We have a very healthy relationship. There are no problems.

We push each other every day in training: when he’s a little bit down, I push him, and when I’m a little bit down (he does the same). We train three goalkeepers, four at the most, for hours a week, and you need that kind of relationship because otherwise, the training is not going to go well.”

Guardian making up shit headlines for clicks, nothing to see here.

It’s taken out of context though. Ramsdale was speaking in a way that seems more hypothetical than a provocative “I don’t like this get me out of here now” sense.

Agree to disagree. That hypothetical clause in the passage is about Raya being down:

And for whatever reason, there might be a day where he’s down and even though I’m suffering and hurting for not playing, I have to stand up and be able to push him.

I read that as the same as saying

even though I’m suffering and hurting for not playing, there might be a day where he’s down for whatever reason and I have to stand up and be able to push him.

So, I don’t think the headline really warps the passage significantly.

a provocative “I don’t like this get me out of here now” sense.

I don’t think the headline implies that.

In any case, it’s certainly much too harsh to say they’re “making shit up”

If you compare the headline to what is being said, it is making up shit. Yes, the exact words exist but they are divorced from the wider context of the situation.

This is pretty standard media clickbait; the aim is to get you to talk about it. Also note the reaction when it’s Ramsdale vs. Raya - the latter literally said he’d like to play in La Liga sometime, and there’s not nearly as much of an uproar.

You’re reading too literally into this IMO.

Agree to disagree. I don’t think the headline drastically changes the sentiment of that sentence. Ramsdale is hurting, which is natural and not a big deal.
