Summary

Mexico is waiting for a new response from Google regarding its mapping service’s use of “Gulf of America” in the U.S., while displaying “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico.

President Claudia Sheinbaum warned that Google will face a lawsuit if it doesn’t restore the original name, arguing it violates Mexico’s sovereignty over 49% of the Gulf. The U.N. also recognizes the historic name.

Google defended its policy, saying it followed longstanding mapping practices after Trump’s renaming declaration amidst rising tensions between Mexico and the U.S.

The issue has also sparked press freedom concerns in the U.S.

The implication behind it is that the US owns the Gulf, and nobody wants this change, especially Americans. It’s chaotic malicious, along the lines of claiming ownership over the Panama Canal (which he also did) and Greenland (did that one, too).
