What are y’all’s opinions on Yaris’s? Is there certain years to avoid?, are they generally reliable cars? Thanks!
I have an 18 hatch and it is the Toyota model. I think the 19 hatches went to the Mazda 2
What country are you in?
US market Yarises were originally built in Japan, shifted to France in the 2010’s, then were rebadged Mazda2’s in the late 2010’s.
Wait. Is the current Mazda 2 still a Toyota?
No the Yaris is a Mazda 2
Really depends on location. A Yaris in Japan is still a true Yaris, where as a Yaris in the US is a rebadge Mazda 2 and in Europe, the Mazda 2 hybrid is a rebadged Yaris hybrid.
in Europe the Mazda 2 is a rebadged Yaris and the Mazda is only available with one single engine while the Yaris can also be had with a stronger hybrid system.
In Australia they are two very different cars.
I kinda wanted one till I realized they were just Mazdas. It even says so on the metal plate on the frame of the driver’s door. I believe the consensus is that Mazdas are not as reliable as Toyotas by a significant margin.
I’ve owned almost every model of mazda, I’ve had 0 issues with them. They are just as reliable as Toyota. The mazda 2 is outstanding for the cost so is the yaris. Sure it’s slow, but it’s light, fun, great on gas and very reliable. If you can get one in manual it’s a proper hot hatch. If my tacoma ever died, I’d buy a used Mazda 2 or Yaris asap and not worry about a car payment.
I can vouch. Owned 6 Mazdas from the 3 to the 6. Reliable vehicles. My parents, my sister and her husband and I switched from early 90s Toyotas to mid 2010s Mazdas. Now we’re just all over the place with brands. I’m back in Toyota product, Lexus GS currently. I had 4 other Lexus after my Mazda. I really do miss my 6 though. Great quality, very good fit and finish and a reliable powertrain that isn’t a ford influence. Soft touch panels everywhere in the 6. I sat in a Camry and it’s hard touch plastic throughout.
Generally speaking they’ve always been decent. Don’t know about the US Mazda 2 based models but if they’re the same mazda 2’s that we got they’d be ok too.
My first car was a 2011 Toyota Yaris and I got it in my junior year of highschool, in 2019. Over 100K miles. It got the job done. I do very much miss it.
I own an 07 Yaris bought new, and a 2017 Yaris (Mazda). Both are great.
I daily drive a 2012 Yaris 110 miles round trip for work. I bought it at 80k miles and it now has 120k after a year of driving. No issues at all yet aside from a hole rusted in my exhaust which I’ll fix this spring. From what I’ve read the 1.5L is a tank.
They’re cheap. They’re cheerful. The 2005-2013 hatch even looks pretty good, imo.
The engines are good, efficient too. There’s basically nothing that could break - it’s a very no-frills car.
Get a manual if you can, the auto needs an extra gear and it saps the limited power that engine makes.
Got a base model 2009 Yaris. Highway mpg is 38, city 33. Bought at 136K, now at 147 K. No problem so far.
I still have a 2010 1.33lt Made in France. It has been excellent until about 120k kilometers, when it started to noticeably burn oil. At 142k it reached a point of burning a litre every 1000 kms and really struggling travelling upslope above 80km/h. Had to eventually swap the engine with a similar used unit and in the last 4 months and about 1000km it doesn’t miss a drop of oil.
Zero rust anywhere, interior is still excellent without any noises. Overall pretty happy with it, now it’s our errand car after I got a 2023 C-HR.
Incredibly reliable. Will take you to grocery shopping, and also on roadtrips if you want (not super comfortable of course).
Really liked my hybrid yaris '16. Only had it for a couple of years but 0 issues.
Bullet proof
Most recent ones are manufactured by Mazda
Depends on location. Japanese and European Yaris is a Yaris, no rebadge. US marketed is a rebadged Mazda 2
In fact the Mazda 2 as sold in Europe is a rebadged Yaris, 3 cyl hybrid and all
I had an 07 yaris and I loved that car. It was a yaris, so it wasnt particularly fast or powerful, but it was pretty reliable for the 3 years I had it before moving up to a corolla. Easy to work on as well sense the engine bay was so open.
That generation though had an issue it seemed like with the blue paint color and every one Ive seen had the paibt flaking off. They also tend to rust out the rocker pannels before the actual car itself dies, so as long as you keep on top of that they will be a great car for you! I loved the 3 door hatch. For a small car it is very spacious in the front seat as a 6’2 guy, and the massive doors on the 3 door model were nice for getting in and out of! If you can find one of them in good condition I see no reason not to buy one!
Blue 09 scions had the same paint problem.
