Thinking about getting a EV. Just curious why you got yours. The reasons I can think of are:

  • Environmentally friendly 🌵
  • Cheaper Fuel ⚡️
  • They are cool/trendy 😎
  • Lower maintenance 🔧

Is there anything surprising that you found out after you bought it?

    • Needed a more reliable ride, love the lower maintenance.
    • Have solar panels, so driving for free essentially
    • Loooove the efficiency
    • Legitimately just feels neato.

    1. Less maintenance. No oil changes. No transmission. Less frequent brake changes. Less shit that can break or leak.
    2. Cheaper fuel.
    3. Quieter cabin. No engine noise or vibration.
    4. Fast/quick.
    5. Environmentally friendly.

Almost all EVs use reduction gears in a fixed differential. Only the Taycan/Etron have a true transmission like an ICE does. EVs, generally speaking, do not “shift”

Nit-Pick here (ignore me if you wish) A drive-train (set of fixed gears) and a transmission (variable gears) are not considered the same thing in engineering.

Brake maintenance yes yearly minimum… Have had to service them twice because they rusted and failed from lack of use. 🙄 The caliper is expensive(1 is 10x cost of pads) I would rather the cost of brake pads getting worn down. And fast/quick in a straight line only.

Move 3 to 5 because I didn’t know better yet and I’m with you. I’ve got two other vehicles, a 1950’s tractor, a house, and long gravel road to maintain. My car needed to be one less thing to have to deal with.

This is my list, as well.

Everyone thinks EV folks are enviro treehuggers, and the environment is a great reason to get an EV, but it’s an afterthought when you look at other features and benefits.

If you haven’t found out yet, you should probably know that your EV both has a transmission(s) and will need oil changes. They are simpler and require less frequent maintenance, but it doesn’t mean they’re not there.

The credits. $7500 federal + $3000 state w/ $30000 EV = a commuter vehicle for $19.5K that will save us $10K more in fueling costs over 5 years. That makes it effectively $15K cheaper than a Civic over vehicle lifetime.

The next one might be a harder sell over an ICE… Bolt going away and nothing else within $8K of that price after incentives. Closest thing is a model 3 RWD and I won’t be buying a Tesla.

We were retiring and wanted something cheap to buy and run (Bolt). After owning the Bolt we realized that we needed something more roomy/comfortable and faster charging for travel. The ID.4 was what we settled on.

We were most surprised that we really loved the experience of driving electric. Being eco friendly and, thanks to PV, being able to make our own fuel were just icing on the cake. Charging at home was also a great option for us.

We really like it. We did consider the Ioniq 5 and the Ariya, but went with the ID.4 because of the tax incentive, otherwise the Ioniq would have won out. After about 3 months and 2k miles, I’d say we really haven’t worn off the newness, so don’t really have the long-term experience. Another plus was the towing capacity vs. the Bolt.

My state didn’t give me any rebate, but I was able to get $9,900 off by leasing my Mini Cooper SE. Mini did charge me a lease fee and a lease end fee so that knocks off some from the rebate, but it is still way better than a tax deduction.

Top reason? The way it looks. The other reasons were why I bought an EV. Looks is why I bought the HI5.

I was a confirmed Kia fan before (two Optimas, two Niros) and it came down to either the EV6 or the HI5 back in early 22. I just liked the way the HI5 looked better.

I haven’t purchased yet (waiting for Ioniq 7), but plan to for 1) reduced maintenance; 2) massively reduced gas stops since I can just top up at home; 3) “free” charging during the day (I work from home) as I also plan to add solar.

95% of my driving is local. I’d almost never have to go anywhere other than home to fill up.

Lower operating costs and I wanted the tax credit before it expired under the old rules.

Tired of paying $500/m for gas in California. Also knew that, after my 05 Elantra, I wanted my next car to be electric. Everything else is a perk.

    1. Free charging at my office, and plan on working here atleast another 5 years.
    2. I like the tech
    3. I love how the model 3 looks. It’s sporty, sleek, low to the ground, and quick enough even in base trim.
    4. Low maintenance, but at the risk of larger more expensive components shitting the bed, and uknown longevity.
