I was trying to change to my winter tires but i can’t get the lugs off, i’ve borrowed this big ass impact from a buddy but ts still is not spinning, if they are threadlocked is there any way to get them off without ruining the studs?
Need a better impact or a bigger breaker bar. They will come off or you break the lugs, either way, they coming off!!
I managed to cross-thread a lug nut, my air impact barely got it off. Check the threads when get them off.
My brother never rotated hot tires and the lug fro,e to the stud. I used pb blaster and a cheater but it just broke the stud.
Stuff like this can happen when maintenance is neglected. Luckily it was an easy fix and I just installed new studs and lugs.
If you can’t get it off. Break the stud. Definitely have the necessary tools and parts before you do this.
Blue and Red loctite will come off with an impact. Green not so much but I doubt most mechanics even know about green loctite.
I don’t fully recommend this - but I had my lugs locked on mags, front tires.
Old school Mechanic suggested I loosen as many lugs as I could a bit if possible, not on stands. Crank the front wheels left and right a few times, jack it up and try to loosen using the breaker bar.
It worked and I was able to remove the wheels. But super risky.
Loosening them like that isn’t too risky and is often how you need to on the fronts if doing it manually (pretty sure parking brakes are only on the rears) or else the wheel will just spin. Not a big fan of turning the tires though, but I guess he was thinking they may have rust on the hub or something.
Some cars have reverse threaded lugs on one side of the car to prevent the lugs from coming loose. What kind of car are you dealing with?
lol, like 1971 Chrysler…
You laugh, but I busted two of five on a '64 Valiant beater on the side of the highway before the light bulb went on.
My go to is my Nitrocat 1250k, then the 1750K, but if that doesn’t work I get my EZ Red extendable 3/4 ratchet and a piece of pipe
Lemme guess the big ass impact days Hercules on it
Have had lugs not come off with a m18 high torque before tbf…
But does it take off the lug nuts lol.
No one with a braincell would use loctite on lug nuts.
However they will over torque the ever living shit out of them or cross thread them. Only fix is apply more torque
Someone might have used anti seize and over tightened them. Local alignment shop did that with my wheels. I had to take them to the dealership so they could use their big ugga dugga on them. That did the trick.
Still an over torque situation.
I’ve seen lots of people say they use red loctite with their wheel spacers. Apparently they don’t know how to torque them properly or something.
If they really do have threadlocker, you need to heat them up with a heat gun. That softens the thread locker. Then, when you find the person the applied threadlocker, confiscate all their tools—they don’t deserve to own any
Heat it anyway, that should break it loose with or without locktite
agree, they must be heated to break the bond. It might also help to use a tire or socket wrench on the nuts that can be hammered repeatedly with moderate force while heating.
Heat might help. But honestly. I’ve spun nuts off that had red loctite without heat. Just use more power!
Try a breaker bar before jumping to drastic solutions. I have done drastic solutions a few times and they suck.
Seriously. Good breaker with some pipe if needed solves a lot of problems
Archimedes approves.
Oh well, time for new wheel studs. It’s easy, and good for your car.
If a decent sized breaker bar doesnt work get ready to replace the studs. Good news is its not expensive or difficult, perhaps a bit time consuming.
Might as well pick up some extras now, especially if you only have one vehicle. Better than walking to the parts store after you snapped off your lugs in the driveway.
If you can’t take it to a shop and ask for a tire rotation shouldn’t be more then a few bucks or free
