I’ve had my Ioniq5 for almost 2 years and finally did my first longish trip. NYC area to Boston and immediately back. First time relying on DC fast charging and at first was kind of nervous but I can say it was flawless. Went thru two Electrify America stops and got high charge rates both times. Experiences no lines or charging issues at all. Also was free. Will not hesitate to do it again.

    Yea I’m in MA and do NY or up through Portland ME often, and it’s always so smooth. Some places, like where we live, just have excellent infrastructure for EVs

    I did a trip two months ago when I got my 6 from DC to NY and I had no problems using the EA network and I’ve almost exclusively used it to charge.

    I drive the platform sibling car to yours and road trip all the time. It’s an excellent car for long trips. I’ve had very few issues DCFC on road trips. I am typically targeting arriving at something like 10-20% and will charge to 80% or whatever lower charge limit will get me to the next charger I want to use. Very rarely do I DCFC above 80% on road trips these days. The lowest charge rate record remains Tesla Magic Dock in Fredonia, NY at 42 kW.

    Love to see people out there driving! These are great cars for trips.

    Nice! Mind telling us which specific locations you stopped at? Looks like the one in Trumbull, CT has good feedback; was that one of them? Auburn, MA mall looks good too.

    Nice! Always have a plan B in mind when it comes to DCFC. I’ve had tons of smooth trips like you and then I’ve had terrible trips where stations are down or speeds are extremely low. Start becoming familiar with other options out there on PlugShare just in case.

    I’ve done Ventura, CA to Anaheim, CA several times in my 80 mile range 2017 Leaf. Level 2 charge is free in Malibu and a fast charge in LA each way. Never been an issue.

    All depends on the area. Glad it went smooth everyone’s experience varies. I have two EA stations close to where I work in a pretty busy metro area. One has been throttling people to 40kw charging been like that for months and the other has had one station down for about 2 months.

      It seems non-Tesla charger reliability/availability is very regional dependent. It sounds like the coasts have decent coverage but the middle of the country can be a crap shoot.

      I suspect this is why we see Colorado (Out of Spec) and Michigan (Other half of Motor Trend office) based EV reviewers being the loudest about charging reliability problems where as the coastal based reviewers complain about charging congestion.

      The whole East coast Interstate system (mainly I-95) is pretty good. North of Augusta, ME can get a bit interesting, but Boston to Orlando is a piece of cake.

    My ford focus electric has only 120 miles of range but I’ve taken it on plenty of road trips and it does take longer but it’s really not bad at all

      my 19 ioniq has like 250ish km in summer but I love it. I bought it from quebec, I live in ontario. about a 600km drive home after I got the car and wouldn’t trade it at all. takes a tad longer, but worth it when my wife has to stop every hour or so for the bathroom anyway

    I drove 3500 miles on delivery of my i4. Mostly on I-40 which was great, except Kingman, AZ where I already had an overnight - and apparently Memphis - where I didn’t even try because my hotel had L2 charging. However, driving up North on I-5 once I got to CA was incredibly disappointing, most of the chargers were de-rated and several had queues (they did work though). I did make it all on EA, and only had one non EA stop the entire trip (not counting L2 charging). Total electric fuel cost of a cross country trip was 10.50. Not bad at all.
