  • I am usually very happy when I see European nations do well. The thing with poland however is that many Poles I know (including half of my family) are very nationalistic right wingers, for their very own reason. I cant even be mad about it, since they where stripped off their statehood over and over again in the last hundreds of years. Anyway, they hate Germany, and they hate the EU project. Despite the fact that the town they live in was basically lifted out of poverty. Out of a decaying ghetto-standard, into a fully developed upper class village with blooming parcs, illuminated waterfountains and more ice-cream-vendors than bars. All of that with funds provided by the European Union. Funds that have been contributed by the “richer” half of the EU - e.g. Germany, France, etc. 🙄 Now many say that Poland will become a small economic powerhouse in the future. Awesome! But will they then contribute to the EU the same way Germany or France do? Or will they call the EU a parasitic enemy that just wants to steal all the hard-earned zloty? Macron is right when he says that Europe is mortal. Let’s hope for the best.

  • Globalization should not be deamonized, but that does not imply that it is wise for us to go “all the way”. Some essential industries like automotive, chemistry/pharma, etc. maybe shouldn’t have been been allowed to outsource everything. Or at least there could have been some restrictions, like “no outsourcing to autocratic countries”.

But as always, money rules the world. And the small man is only happy if goods are cheap. I can’t even be mad at China for taking advantage of that. It’s brilliant. I’m just disappointed with all of the West.

  • I think you’re overstating something. You’re right about the well documented history of serious failures regarding far right extremism. That includes mishandled informants, destroyed files after the NSU was uncovered, and failures that allowed neo Nazi networks to persist and even thrive. Those are established facts.

But there is no credible evidence that the primary objective of the institution over the past 40 years was to protect neo Nazis. That is a political conclusion rather than one supported by the findings of the parliamentary inquiries. Let’s argue with reason, not with emotion.

That being said, fuck the BfV for its failures.

  • Hej du 🇩🇰🇪🇺 you mentioned Russia and it benefitting from European division. This is actually something thats on my mind for quite some time now. The only nation benefitting from Brexit, Farage, Trump, Orban, Andrzej Duda, AfD, Le Pen, etc. is Russia. I never found any hard evidence or proof that their misonformation campain or is the reason for let’s say Brexit, but it’s hard to believe that it’s all just an coincidence.

Personally, I’d like to forget the last 10 years and let the UK formally reenter the EU, but no half-assed cherry picking this time. We are all europeans and we need to stand and fall together.

Also, I am deeply afraid of the AfD movement in my home country Germany. A Dexit or Gerexit (?) would surely mean an end to all of Germanys exporting markets. And guess whose party’s members regularly call for deeper integration with Russia? Yep.

  • Nice analysis. I agree with every bit of it. IMO, Brexit was among the most ignorant, naive and stupid things that the UK ever did. If the Suez canal crisis was the “beginning of the end”, then Brexit might have been the final nail in the coffin.

And I hate to admit, but if I look at the current global situation, I think europeans and brits will eventually need to get their shit together and move closer once again. So every lost % of the UK’s bleeding economy will also be our European loss by having a weaker partner in times to come.
