  • Nihilism surged in the western zeitgeist during this time period. Anti-corporate messaging of the punk and grunge movements from the 90s were still going strong, and then anti-military sentiment became renewed as well due to war in the middle east and terrorist attacks in western countries happening at increased frequency. Any time we see public opinion start to turn against western military action, you’ll see long hair and facial hair in men’s fashion become popular because it is explicitly not allowed in the military. It’s another form of subtle anit-military messaging in the media.

  • Generally true, but if the professor in this context was not a moron, he probably mentioned at the start of the class that he would be forcing a change to requirements part way through the course. Ideally, he would’ve specified what kind of changes this would be, in order for the students to account for that in their design. I think it’s likely this happened, but the student was lacking so much experience he didn’t understand that hint or what he needed to do in the design in order to later swap parameters more easily. I’m going to withhold judgement on this professor having only heard a biased account. It could’ve been a very good assignment, now being told from the perspective of a mediocre student.

  • As a non-drinker of coffee, I am fully onboard with raising the price of coffee. Everyone is far too addicted to it and drink excessively to an unhealthy amount. Less coffee would be better for general health. Same for chocolate, as I saw someone else mention.

Too bad Trump doesn’t care about that and doesn’t actually have any plan in mind for this kind of economic policy for the welfare of the people.

  • Another z-shooter like Tribes Vengeance. A different company got the rights to the franchise and tried to make a more realistic physics engine approach in the sequel, Tribes Ascend, but it was not as fun imo. The use of the grappler specifically to slingshot yourself up to fast speeds and to change direction without losing speed were key to the enjoyment and strategy in Vengeance that Ascend never managed to replicate.

Also, I love the shooter moba genre. I loved Monday Night Combat and the sequel, Super MNC. It’s a shame those games never took off. I’ve been really enjoying Deadlock so far and can’t wait to see how it turns out. But more games in that genre would be welcome.

  • It’s so you can participate in primary elections for that party. Some people who vote Dem in the general election will sometimes register as Republican so that they can vote for spoiler candidates in the Republican primary. There’s not enough people doing it for that plan to really have any impact though.

But the same logic applies if you are trying to hide your votes from nosy family. Family members have enough info on you to be able to look up your party registration so if you are afraid of them causing drama, you can register as whatever party the rest of your family is registered as and then vote for the other side in the general election. The actual votes you cast cannot be traced back to you… Which can raise other concerns like not being able to verify if your vote actually counted.

  • The problem with that strategy is that moderate Republicans don’t watch the news. They believe that all other Republicans are just like them and hold all the same beliefs, because all their friends are in the same echo chamber. So then they believe all Republican politicians are the same way. They intentionally don’t pay attention to the news because it is full of sensationalism and depressing things they can’t personally control like terrorism and mass shootings. They still believe it’s important to vote, because that’s the patriotic thing to do, and they can just fill the bubbles next to every name marked REP and not have to worry about doing research and learning facts. It’s just the easy way and they’ve lived their whole lives doing things the easy way because of white privilege and generational wealth, but any low points in their lives they will consider to be “hardship” so they “know” that anyone living in poverty is just not trying hard enough, because they personally made it through that “struggle” with barely more than the average effort they usually contribute to anything.

How do I know this? I was raised in a family that is exactly how I described here. The only reason I’m not just like them is that I went to public school and made friends with kids who did not come from the same background. It took about 17 years to finally see all the flawed logic and head-in-sandness before finally breaking free and forging my own path based on my own beliefs.
