1·2 days agoThat is distinctly different from arithmetic but faster or writing but faster.
But not “problem-solving but faster”.

22·2 days agoWait until the printing press arrives, all the scribe monks will become jobless and no one will have experience anymore.
Wait until the cotton gin arrives, all the hand weavers will become jobless and no one will have experience anymore.
Wait until the computer arrives, people will become obsolete and no one will have experience anymore.
Wait until the steam engine, automobiles, planes, calculators, telephones, bla bla
“Slippery slope” arguments like these assume that once a technology introduces a specific risk, society lacks the agency to create counter-measures, new norms, or alternative uses for that technology.
History shows that when a “slope” appears, regulation steps in, technology evolves to solve the problem, or the culture shifts to reinterpret the tool.
In almost every case, the feared “bottom” of the slope was never reached because humans constantly built ramps or bridges along the way.

Privacy@programming.dev•Nitter: Update Oct 10th seeking funding and legal help
3·3 days agoPretty sure the owner would have to doxx themselves in order to fight this in court, not sure if they’re prepared to do that or just shut it down. Either way many other instances will stay running all over the world and this game of Whack-a-Mole (Streisand Edition) will continue ad infinitum.

Linux@programming.dev•EXT4 Deprecates Its Journaled "data=journal" Mode
5·6 days agoIsn’t that kind of a huge change
Sortof… but almost nobody is actually using
data=journal, as the default isordered.I do think it’s important to keep it as an option though, so I disagree with removing it entirely. I suppose it could be forked into a separate module by someone who wants to maintain the journal support. I wonder if ext3’s journaling will still be supported?
Probably for the same reasons that led them to that specific project in the first place… other projects may not be relevant to their interests.

Privacy@programming.dev•Custom email aliasing – throw-away emails using a custom domain
3·22 days agoI suppose if you don’t already have your own domain/email hosted on your own *nix box, and you use CF, then I guess this is a workable solution. A lot of geeks have just been doing this the old-fashioned way for decades… so seeing a different way to do it looks quite foreign (and a little bit of “why would you do this”) to me :p
To me the whole point of custom email+domain is to host it yourself and be free from vendor lock-in like this, but I suppose not everyone’s usecase is the same.

Programming@programming.dev•DigitalOcean has $3 million for DHH and nothing for CSS-Tricks - keith.is
2·26 days ago“Bot” there doesn’t necessarily imply a malicious spam/AI bot… legitimate B2B use is also included, which is a much higher percentage than illegitimate traffic. Same for AWS, other cloud providers, and even Cloudflare itself.
Bot traffic describes any non-human Internet traffic

I’ve heard “what is Windows?” from a Windows user.
…to be fair, it’s not like the name is plastered all over one’s experience with their PC most of the time, so how would they know?
