I’m an IT consultant and I had a meeting with AWS yesterday. My manager asked me to give the AWS team an overview of our solution so they could see what they could use for a new program they were pitching our clients. That’s all the information I had, so I started the meeting by saying “I’m not sure what you all are proposing, so I’m going to give you a high level but please let me know where you need more details.”

After I had finished giving my overview, I tried to get more info out of them about what they were proposing to build. I shit you not, their response was that they wanted to "build an app that allowed the business to run with AI and ML (Machine Learning).”

They didn’t say, “we want to solve X and Y problems” or “enable Z functionality.” Literally their entire goal was to build something with AI. I’m glad I wasn’t on camera or in person, because I literally face-palmed.

Ok, I read the linked sources from the article and think I understand this a bit better now.

I believe the twice as likely number from the headline is coming from this:

By statistically modelling storms in a 1.3°C cooler climate, this model showed that climate change was responsible for an increase of about 150% in the number of such storms (now once every 53 years on average, up from every 130 years), and equivalently that the maximum wind speeds of similar storms are now about 6.1 m/s (around 11%) more intense.

And I think the 200-500 times more likely number is referring to Sea Surface Temperatures that lead to major storms. So something like (and this is me talking, not how it’s worded in any of the source material) “when the Sea Surface Temperature is at 69° F then major hurricanes can be produced, and due to climate change, we’re getting temperatures that high 200-500 times more than we used to.”

I hope I interpreted that correctly.

I’m not smart enough to understand the difference of the “twice as likely” in the title and the “200-500 times more likely” in the subtitle.

The article also says “The burning of fossil fuels has made storms as severe as Hurricane Helene about 2.5 times more likely than they were in the pre-industrial age”.

And then says “A study by Climate Central published on Monday found the sea surface temperature around Milton’s path was 400-800 times more likely because of the climate crisis.”

What does that mean, that the sea surface temperature was more likely?

You know there’s just some middle school English teacher out there making memes just for this purpose.

It’s weird huh? You don’t really see any Libertarians protesting police violence. Or very many up in arms when the Supreme Court said that the President is above the law. I also don’t recall seeing any headlines about massive Libertarian protests when conservatives threw out decades of established law that a woman had the right to make decisions about her own body. And come to think of it, when Trump said he was going to revoke legal immigration statuses and do mass deportations, the Libertarians were pretty quiet about that too.

It’s almost like Libertarians actually like a government that treads all over them, and the Don’t Step on Snek flag is only about guns.
