I just boot Batocera off an SD card. I even have it configured to load its files from a folder on the SSD.

You can set up dual boot with another Linux distro. Sound requires a patch on other distros but it is easy to do.

I used my 64GB for a while before upgrading the SSD. It worked fine with strategic management of SD cards.
