Crazy that as awful as the Emery era was we managed to get Saka and Saliba from it

That’s more credit to Edu and our academy than Emery specifically. Emery did give Saka his debut though. Still remember those Saka 77 Europa League nights

Emery signed Tierney, Saliba, Martinelli and gave debuts to Saka and ESR. Club might be too big for him, but his talent ID and development is still there.

Saka came from academy and Saliba from yough scouting, both signings that Unai had absolutely nothing to do with.

Emery era was a special kind of awful but unrelated to how good our players are now.

LOL. Emery broke Saka and Smith-Rowe into the first team. He actually cultivated the youth better than Arteta has so far.

One day Ode should be there replacing Musiala.

Martinelli is difficult to surpass Vini, but still have hope.

Ramsdale…if he plays as our starter as usual this year, he should be here.

I love how Transfermarkt do this and then just has the most random formations too.

It also saddened me to see that we are no longer the most valuable squad in the world. £1.07B to City’s £1.2B.

Damn it, Mikel your treatment of Rammers is tanking the value of our club, leave now!

Even then PSG will hold out or try to sign him to an extended salary so he has more guaranteed money in case he gets hurt in the spring or Euros, or so that he can be loaned out to Madrid to get around FFP. I expect no end to the shenanigans around his transfer whenever it happens.

Superb that we have three players in it but also says a lot for England’s turn around that there are four Englishmen in it, I know Jamal chose Germany in the end but his father is British and he grew up here…hear him talking in English, he’s a Croydon kid!

To be fair, the transfermarkt valuations also include the „english tax“. Since most english players stay in or move to the prem, they will naturally cost more money, because PL clubs spend more money on average

I believe their success isn’t just a fleeting moment. It’s been a decade since the initiation of the Elite Player Performance Plan and a 25 years since the academy system began. Given the multiple levels of pro football and top-tier coaches in the PL, England is now consistently producing quality talent.

How much of football ability is “coached”? I always hear that top tier ability can’t be taught but I’m not sure to be honest. Obviously need good base level genes but I think a portion can be coached.

It’s not just “coached” but also recognized and given the chance to do so.

If coaching had no effect on football ability, then China should be a powerhouse today. The country loves football, the government pushes for football, but their coaching and infrastructure is not there.

Even at the top level you see elite coaches can truly impact ‘footballing ability’. It was only a few years ago Joelinton and Xhakas were “donkeys” but last season they were undroppable thanks to the coaching of the team.

There’s definitely aspects of it that come from nature and nurture outside of football but the more players you train to a high level the more likely you will have highly trained players with the right characteristics to go on and become elite.

When you look at players like ESR and Saka who were in the academy from at least the age of 9, I’ve never known a top player to be recruited in to an academy at the age of 16 and make it to the prem for example. The difference I noticed when I played with academy players was their advanced understanding of the game (drilled in by their coaches). It was like they had cheat codes, they knew what to do. I’d definitely say coaching is a big part of it, talent needs to be nurtured correctly.

I’d say they’d go hand in hand. I never even got scouted until I had a great coach (who took it a bit too seriously) along with a few other teammates. Low and behold that coach was an academy boy too hence he had that knowledge to share.

I’m pretty sure Gabriel Jesus is one of those players. He joined Palmeiras’ youth when he was 15, hence his “brings the streets to the pitch” attitude since he wasn’t academy cooked.

It’s crazy how much of an understanding of the game you need to have to perform at a high level. You think you understand football until someone explains all the in-depth coaching and stuff.

Yeah but this stuff is cyclical. Germany also revamped their coaching and youth system quite a while ago and reaped the benefits of that but that cycle is obviously ending now. England need to capitalise on it before it passes

Bayern’s (probably) never letting him go. He’s their Muller replacement. Far too valuable and a German national so he’d cost even more. Would love to have him obviously he’s one of the best players in the world.

The valuations don’t make sense. Saliba has to be the most valuable defender in the world right now.

That’s about 60m pounds. We all know he would cost at least 100m.

Definitely a bit low on his valuation. I doubt we’d let him go for anything under 100m. No way he’s going at 60m.

Kind of baffles me Saliba isn’t the most expensive CB in the world based on valuation.
