People are used to thinking their opinions matter and this is an important thing happening in the world so they feel the need to wade in on one side.
But yes, the smart thing to do is either keep quiet or explicitly hedge what you’re saying, neither of which seems to be an option for most people on social media.
Then there’s also the other side of it where people ask why they don’t use their platforms and elevated status to help effect change or bring light to atrocities. They can’t win either way
Or don’t ask why, and simply condemn for not having done it-- or merely not having done it quickly enough.
‘I’d like to take a moment to better understand the situ–’
‘YOU MONSTER!’
And that’s how Noam Chomsky went from being a respected academic linguist to a one-man comedy roadshow for his newspaper scrapbooking hobby.
If you’re that smart then it’s gotta be a massive danger.
I mean, the man is still smarter than me at 93 and I’m fairly certain he’ll still be smarter than me as a corpse.
Let’s be real here, it’s by no means a symmetrical relationship. The smart thing to do for yourself and your career in a western nation would be to say that you stand with Israel. That’s just the reality. You can get fired, doxxed, and called a supporter of terrorism for expressing support for the Palestinian people, or even suggesting the the continued Israeli occupation is the root cause of the violence and deaths on both sides.
I won’t say much more b/c I don’t know how political I can get w/o getting banned.
This is absolute rubbish. There are loads of celebrities who publicly support the Palestinian cause. What are you on about?
Just look at Arsenal. Zinny was forced to take down his post due to backlash while Elneny was not.
There are literal doxxing sites dedicated to getting Palestinian activists fired from their jobs. Just this week CEOs are compiling lists of people who support the Palestinians.
If I had to guess, I’d say Arsenal’s large international fanbase is the reason why Zinchenko had to take his post down. If the club only had English fans, I don’t think that would be the case. So yes there’s pressure on both sides but it’s especially biased towards the Israelis in most western institutions.

Some CEOs may have asked. Meanwhile, a lot of people have signed the Harvard letter supporting the Palestinians (I assume you’re referring to that).
The only reason it isn’t clear-cut pro-Palestinian bias this time around is because of the absolute barbarity and horror that the Palestinian Hamas committed.
Listen, I lived in the UK when I was a child for about 5 years but I’ve spent most of my life in the US, so I’m not going to pretend like I know too much about the political environment there other than what I’ve seen from the internet.
But if the pro-Israel lobby in the UK is as aggressive it is in the US (and believe me it’s aggressive), then there isn’t really an equivalence. Yeah radical student activists and academics tend to support Palestine. Meanwhile the both leaders of the democrats, republicans, labour, and tories are staunch supporters of Israel. There are 2 laws on the books in the US that criminalize BDS, a nonviolent movement.
