I’m not sure what people expected. Apple maps renamed the gulf as well. Every commercial map service has to do it as it’s a regional law.

What law would Google or Apple be breaking if they were to keep the actual name? As far as I know this didn’t go through Congress, it was just donnie with his Sharpie.
I’m not sure what law it would break but it’s generally expected in business to follow local laws be it for contracts or certification.

I reported to Google that it is inaccurate. There are no signs indicating Lake America, there are no locals who know it as Lake America and even searching for Lake America on Google Maps shows no results, you have to search for Lake Ontario.

There are better articles, websites, guides etc. like this that aren’t made by a company who obviously choose their own services as the best option. I have some saved on my computer but it’s off and I’m in bed so I’ll add those tomorrow.

OSM added a “official_name:en-US” field to hold “Golf of America” but the wiki says “In practice, renderers are unlikely to label the Gulf based on
official_name:en-US=*”. OSM works offline, doesn’t sell your data, and doesn’t show ads. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Mexico#Name Lake Ontario is still labeled “Lake Ontario.”Google is pretending like they are just being “neutral” on this, but somehow they are showing two names to other countries for the Gulf of Mexico and plan to do the same here.
That requires some action and that action took a choice. If they are gaslighting us into thinking they are not being political here, they are.
Keeping the name most people will use for it may require a small step to put in an override if they are just ingesting US names for US customers, but still, making that decision and taking that small step is far more neutral in these cases.

It just feels like a very basic feature missing. There’s an app on fdroid that can do it apparently ( 2way sync), but I am hesitant to log into any app with my credentials that isn’t tied to the provider.

Canada should announce that they’ve changed the names of all the Great Lakes to Canadian names, like Lake Toronto, and Lake Ottawa.
