15. 📰 120-year bun alert! Omiltemi rabbit spotted after 120 years without a trace (direct link) (👍138 👎1)
from Bun Alert System (!bun_alert_system@lemmy.sdf.org)
Omiltemi rabbit comes back to life after 120 years without a trace
A prime example is the Omiltemi cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus insonus), which recently reappeared in Mexico after staying out of official sight for over 120 years. “Just knowing that it had been 100 years, and no other scientist had seen a live [Omiltemi] rabbit is incredible,” said Almazán-Catalán. Adding to the confusion, the subtle physical differences between the Omiltemi rabbit and other common species led to years of misidentification. It turns out that the Omiltemi cottontail rabbit lacks the fluffy white tail that many associate with bunnies. Global project to find missing animalsThe rediscovery of the Omiltemi rabbit wasn’t just a local win – it was part of a broader mission. 🖊️️🤖

Young bats learn to be discriminating when listening for their next meal
The second “whine chuck” came from the túngara frog, a preferred prey species for these bats. Just as herpetologists can tell a frog species by its call, frog-eating bats can use these calls to identify the best meal. Grant MaslowskiWe considered whether the associations between sound and a delicious meal are an evolved specialty that bats are born with. They also responded more weakly than adults to the sounds of túngara frogs, a palatable, abundant prey that adult bats prefer. Thus it seems that juvenile bats must learn the associations between sounds and food over the course of their lives. 🖊️️🤖

💬 Training collar, recommendations please (direct link), posted in DogTraining (👍14 👎2)
My dog loves mountainbiking but needs a training collar for squirrels. The remote isn’t pocket-accessible. Need a handsfree remote or mount (wrist, arm, chest, handlebar, belt). Affordable solutions preferred—his behavior isn’t high-maintenance. Ideas? 🖍🤖
