      That one was John C. Breckinridge, he got 72 out of 303 EC votes. The winner that year was Lincoln, with 180 EC votes. I am stretching the truth because he wasn’t really third party, it was a split party.

        Considering that Lincoln was the first Republican president and at that time the Republican party was just a few years old, it could be argued that a third party actually won the 1860 election.

        The Republican party sure has changed a lot since then.
