I got my OLED yesterday and so far all three HDR games I’ve tested (Tetris Effect, THPS1&2 and modded Control) won’t allow HDR to be enabled. I cant see any workarounds for them so far either. Hopefully this will be improved with time, but as a start it seems HDR support is about as annoying as it is on desktop PC!
It was kind of a pain, but I figured out how to get Tetris Effect working in HDR on the OLED. I wrote how I did it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/17z25y5/which_hdr_games_actually_work_in_hdr_mode_some/kb8c8ea/
Unfortunately it does seem like console HDR is generally vastly superior to PC (Windows/Steam OS) :/
I have very little trouble at all with HDR on Windows 11 on my monitor and TV these days, but it’s whole different thing on the Steam Deck, doesn’t seem to work on most HDR games, which would be no trouble on Windows. Has Valve said anything about this issue?
To be expected, HDR on linux is super new
I would expect developers and valve to improve upon it over time
Tetris Effect apparently has a custom settings page for Steam Deck and they didn’t expect it to get HDR support. A fix should come for it at some point.
Give it a year or atleast a few months before theres an AUTO HDR feature release on linux
HDR in Diablo 4 and Hogwarts works fantastic. I think the new Deck OLED screen is awesome. I won’t miss my LCD after I sell it.
Tbh the protocol for enabling HDR on normal desktop environments on linux isn’t even finished yet. Not sure what valve is using to enable HDR on the steam deck but I’m not surprised it doesn’t work everywhere. I think in 2-3 years there will be plenty of games where this will work out of the box.
Valve is using their own HDR implementation in Gamescope, literally nothing else really exists.
Ah I see. That makes sense.
It’s been absolutely amazing for me in Elden Ring, cyberpunk, days gone, etc.
