Whenever I see videos of the engine online its someone doing something stupid like making it output 800hp while doing donuts and burnouts. I love the engine everytime I hop in my mums 335i, like I can just enjoy it, even on the highway it pulls flawlessly and sounds amazing and on back roads even with the constant speeding up and slowing down you can still engage the turbos because it has next to no lag.

I mean people will always tune/mod cars but why to the extent of destroying the engine in 10k miles? I want an e92 335i, its my dream car and always has been since I first drove one but I don’t think there is going to be any left soon.

I had a stock e92 335i and it’s power delivery was pretty boat like and disappointing. Just a plugin tune made it so much nicer to drive. My wife had a 3l z4 with less power at the time and she didn’t enjoy driving the e92 at all. The B48 in the X2 is worlds different in terms of fun factor and power delivery. Probably not a popular opinion though.

Because the potential with these engines is fantastic. I know of literally countless tuned N54’s that have done hundreds of thousands of miles & not blown up.

Maintenance is key with them & as long as they’re well taken care of you can easily add more power with a couple of bolt on modifications.

I chip tuned my N54 with the JB4 and did intake, downpipes. Had 204k miles on it when I sold it and got my M4. Only ever had one major issue when the water pump died. Sometimes I would get a few misfires and that would be my cue to change the spark plugs, which would fix the issue immediately.

No manual is safe these days. You can still find many untouched autos tho. Although most of the 800hp ones are the autos since those ZF 6 speeds can take a beating with little to no modification. The clutch will take a beating in the manuals from that much power.

OP why would people watch the same boring thing several times in a row? Videos of modded cars are popular because they all inspire us. Nobody’s saying your N54 isn’t a good engine stock

A minor tune does make them feel much more ‘alive’. IMO though, going beyond stage 1+ is totally unnecessary as you start to lose responsiveness through turbo lag as you make the engine’s power delivery more dependant on boost.

The BMW official tune, the MPPK is excellent as it wakes the engine up nicely without any drawbacks.

US/UK markets may differ but there are plenty of unmodified 335s out there. Social media and forums make it out that all of them are tuned but that’s not the case. You’re also more likely to find unmodified N54s if you look for E90s or basically anything that isn’t an E92/E93, they came in quite a few models

Same with the N13B16 out of the 114i, don’t think there are many left with the stock horsepower.

You’re just mad because you’re getting gapped by every modified N54. 🤷‍♂️

I drive a alpina and they modified it to 400hp and its literally perfect power for this engine. 110k miles ans still going strong. Had the injectors fail at 85k miles but no other issues yet

    1. if they’re posting it, it’s to get some attention. Bone stock cars don’t get the attention modified cars do
    2. they’re a blast to drive stock, modded, even better. I had an E60 535, an F10 535, and a G30 540, didn’t post them to social media other than privately for my friends with similar cars. But then, I don’t care about doing burnouts (Michelin aren’t cheap), don’t care for attention, my mods were for me to enjoy
    3. the BMW community, as a whole, is very mod friendly. Which is why it’s usually fairly inexpensive to mod a BMW compared to say a Merc
