I just bought a Tesla universal (hope I’m not going to regret that) and I’m installing a 40A breaker / #8 TECK-90 to hardwire it (I’m getting a good deal on the work, but the electrician is lazy and is taking too long to do it).

I don’t have a car yet, but I figured it’s better not to put the cart before the horse. There’s a damned good chance the only cars available will be TESLAs anyway, everything else is sold out /pre sold.

Not much more than that…just a baby step towards the future.

PS: I’m the lazy electrician.

That is completely untrue unless you are in some obscure part of the United States or are looking for a specialty vehicle.

I bought one in March and it’s the best car I’ve owned in 25 years, the most fun I’ve had driving ever. Enjoy.

Good move, but you want a higher amp connection to get a faster charge - 50 or 60 amp - talk to other electricians. And definitely look beyond Tesla before you decide on an EV.

No, but it may be the car you want.

Wife loved the eTron until she failed charging on the test drive. She would still rather have the eTton, but has over 100K miles on her Model S. Her dad lives about 1K miles away and she visits 3 times a year, trusting the car and charging is paramount.

It’s a good idea to prepare a charger into your house. Car manufacturers seem to be moving to the Tesla charging port. You can now use the fact you have an EV charger as a selling feature if you were to sell your house.

    Why didn’t you use #6 and a 60A breaker or #8 and a 50A. Why a 40A? So confised

#8 Teck-90 is good for 55 amps. The breaker will be a 40 amp breaker and the charger will be limited to 30 amps (7.2Kw) as I live in a town house strata complex and not a stand alone house.

I have to share the electrical service with my fellow strata members & I’m on council so it would be unbecoming of me to eat up all of the spare capacity.

I will get whatever I can get my hands on and consider myself lucky to get anything in my local market for the 2023/2024 year. Hopefully supply improves soon.
