Hi.

Hope you’re doing well.

Football is full of emotions and it is probably quite cutthroat in a lot of ways, so I am very lenient and patient with football and players like I am in general in real life, but there is a certain threshold that very rarely gets crossed for me.

For example, a player can get sent off (lack of discipline) a lot and even join a rival club if it means they have better chances at major silverware (something like RVP coming to United), but for me a player refusing to come onto the pitch or train or publicly criticizing their manager or team mates is something that makes me lose respect for them (although if the player has mental health issues, then I’m open to hearing their perspective). But, in general, if you cannot resolve your issues privately, then maybe leave the club and start afresh or find another solution besides airing your dirty laundry while you’re an active player.

Another thing that makes me lose respect for a player is if I feel they’ve betrayed their values for money (ie as Jordan Henderson has apparently done). If i suspect a player who I feel stands for something goes to a country which isn’t known to respect those values, then I cannot respect that player. If they donate a sizable portion (if not the whole amount) to charity and try to increase awareness in said country, then I feel they have an obligation to make their fans and the public at large aware so as not lose faith in that player (I usually prefer people being charitable not being made public knowledge, but this kind of situation is an exception). But if they don’t make a public statement, then I definitely cannot respect them, but that’s just me and most people are probably fine with this.

As far as gaining or maintaining respect, players like Sergio Aguero and Juan Mata never making a fuss or causing trouble and being professionals of the highest order and acting with integrity has my respect.

What are times you lost or gained complete respect for a player or manager?

Lost respect for Kenny Dalglish and Gerard during the Suarez racism debacle. Felt like they were better people than to be so one eyed during that incident, especially with the whole team t-shirt thing (respected Jordan Henderson for calling it out as wrong and not wearing the t-shirt). Could definitely have been handled better. Not as upset about it now but was definitely disgusted then.

Not sure if I would say lost respect for Pep, but definitely opened my eyes to the reality and complexity of sports washing in football, specifically for his comments and stance towards supporting Man City’s position when faced with the 100+ financial breaches. At a point he just seemed to back himself into a corner and was forced to double down.

Gained respect for Arteta for the way he handled discipline in the Arsenal squad.

Klopp and his constant whining. Arteta for acting like a tool most every game.
Ronaldo for his prima Donna bullshit at ManU.

Son is an overall beloved player. However, when he kicked at a Chelsea player (can’t remember who) in the crotch and chest studs up, never respected him the same since.

Probably not quite your point, but general dirty play. Shouldering keepers when they’re throwing, flopping, stopping play to complain to the referee, getting into the referee’s face, or “flapping” (the “wtf”/ disappointment arms out gesture when a teammate makes a mistake).

ETH and the club handling of a player who domestically abused their girlfriend, and tried their very best to get him back into the team till a massive fan backlash that wanted him gone.

Zinchenko. Dude was whining about Ukraine all the time (and rightfully so, I respect him for it) then turns around and says he’s pro-Israeli. Seems like he’d know firsthand what it’s like to be invaded

I really liked Robinho. No need to say why I can’t anymore.

I don’t like Cantona. I don’t like his personality. I don’t like some acts he did. I don’t like his arrogance. But reading some things said by Guy Roux or Alex Ferguson gave me some respect for him.

Ex-player Gary Neville’s whiplash-inducing u-turn on the Spurs/Liverpool VAR scandal. Happy with him as a pundit (who dislikes the tories as one should) but now can’t listen to him without suspicion

Brendan Rodgers putting Sterling in his place on a documentary. Instant respect for Rodgers, and disdain for Sterling…never liked him since

Brenden Rodgers. He can get a good run of form and break top 4 or be a league leader only to then bottle every chance he gets. Lost the title with Liverpool, lost top 4 with Leicester, got Leicester relegated too. Bummer

I don’t know if you have any idea how football management works. The manager is tasked with taking the resources that he gets from ownership, and guide the players and put them into positions to succeed. He isn’t responsible for Gerrard’s slip, Leicester’s response to COVID, or Leicester’s relegation (after non-existent support from ownership)

I don’t rate Rodgers too much, but he’s done more with less, especially compared to the litany of ManU managers since Sir Alex retired.

Nevermind. I totally misread and misunderstood the post. But to answer this question correctly I must say Koeman with that Barcelona fiasco.

    Giggs- no comment

Terry- kinda self explanatory too, you’ve got your team mates backl, not their wives on their back

Klopp- stop this victim complex. I want to like you but you arnt more hard done by than anyone else so just get on with it

The fact that people can’t see that Klopp’s “victim complex” is just asking for things that would benefit everyone is baffling.

        Ikr

Everyone else after a PGMOL complaint, “What, that’s it? When will the refs be accountable?”

Liverpool go against he PGMOLs apology “Oh always the victims, it happens to everyone”

Klopp has every right to be annoyed, but once stuff started coming out about a replay everyone went the opposite direction.

If you don’t support Klopps stance on that, you have no right to complain about future var mistakes.

Everyone was on Klopp’s side for the Spurs incident. Acting like thats why people are hating is hilariously delusional. He’s been the most whiney manager in the league for several years. People hated him way before this situation where he was actually correctly bitching. Only a Liverpool fan couldn’t see that lol.
