I was recently doing a referee course where one of the referee training officers was talking about losing control of games due to brawls. And he brought up the battle of stamford bridge where Tottenham drew to Chelsea in 2015 causing Tottenham to lose the tile race, and then he said “ mark clattenburg one of the better english refs in this country lost control of that game”.

And that statement surprised me because i always heard that clattenburg was a bad ref. So i ask what are or were the best english refs if with even have any that is?

The truth is that they’re all extremely good referees, who are being held to an impossibly high standard by fans who seldom know anything about reffing.

The best refs, you never hear about. They do their jobs, make the right calls and don’t piss anyone off. If you’re hearing the name of a ref in the news, it’s usually because they fucked up.

You can tell that Mike Deane wanted to be a footballer. He has been caught a few times celebrating goals and games He was officiating.

It’s very simple. The refs you’ve never heard about were the best.

Clattenberg and Dean are at a point where they’re happy to admit that they didn’t do things right just so they get attention.

Howard Webb got the 2010 World Cup final. It was a very contentious game with a litany of bad tackles. Some people tried to say he did a bad job, but if anything his failing was that he was too lenient, trying to keep it a football game.

It was English ref, Jack Taylor, in 1974 final too. Gave the first ever, and second ever, penalty in a final.

Mate I am currently a ref in very bottom of the pyramide and there were only 1-2 games where I was not sworn at either by the players or actual managing staff. Stuff like “you’re a fcking joke”, “you have no clue what you are doing” or “you don’t even deserve to be here”. Cards fly all the time because idiots are everywhere. I cannot say I make no mistakes. But I 100% can say I try to do my best even under constant pressure. Unfortunately there is a really small number of players/coaches that really understand the toughness of ref’s job.

      This x1999

Anybody who shits on referees, should also go pass the exam on the LOTG and go see how easy it is to make every single decision factually correct
