It failed by a vote of 52-47.
Only reason the GOPers voted for this was because they knew it would fail, but of course they get sole credit in the headlines anyway

the problem is that at this point, it’s become a vicious, self-reinforcing feedback loop, and the symptom is now being folded in as a part of the cause
That also happened in Orban’s Hungary, but these displays of fascist violence and intimidation are just as likely to alienate people as they are to rally the fascist base. People think they like mass deportations until their kid’s science teacher gets body slammed by masked government agents in the school hall in front of all their kids and then they start going to those protests that have been happening in front of immigration detention centers in America every day for over a year.
As to the thoughts of the average American: again, yes, outliers exist, but the vast majority of people here just keep their head down and don’t do anything out of incuriousity, ignorance, misguided (and imo caustic) individualism, exhaustion, or outright greed (the “fuck you, I got mine” mentality)
And we are not at all exceptional in this regard. Look at the UK far right, the Italian far right, the way the average Russian has publicly conducted themselves since their government invaded Ukraine, etc. The United States has serious and terrifying problems, but it’s not because we’re exceptionally evil people on the individual level, it’s because the shithead 30% of our society has had better luck here than they have had in other places.
Not to mention, the whole narrative of American Exceptionalism is simply categorical bullshit
Honestly that’s all I’m trying to say here. We’re definitely not exceptionally good, but we aren’t exceptionally evil either. We’re just people with a lot of farmland and other natural resources who didn’t get bombed as often as other places during the 20th century, so now we’ve got a big ass military and GDP and a lot of us think we’re special.
Your beef isn’t with the headline writer who’s describing the situation accurately, it’s with the Republicans running an ass backwards government where the President apparently gets to spend whatever money he wants on whatever he wants to spend it on unless Congress can find the votes to tell him no

Lots of polls have shown for months now that there are several shitloads who don’t like this administration’s immigration policies and think the Nazi shit is disgusting
This country fucking sucks.
The systems in it that give disproportionate power to bigots and oligarchs certainly do. But the average American really is no different than the average European or Russian person or whatever, for better and worse. They can be a little dumb and selfish but they’re not heartless monsters on average.

It’s being entirely driven by shifts in self identified Republicans, so I don’t think anyone’s attitudes are changing so much as some shitheads dropping their masks. Still a problem, just a different kind of problem.

“They’re given rotten frozen food, or in the case of last week, they found live worms in their food, we’re also hearing of people being denied toilet paper,” said activist Catalina Adorno, who explained why she arrived to stand in support of detainees.
Late Wednesday morning, New York Congressman Adriano Espaillat and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker were allowed inside and spoke to detainees who are complaining about inhumane conditions and inadequate medical care.
“Repercussions and retaliation have been launched against the people in the hunger strike. We were informed that 13 of them were moved out since the hunger strike began,” Espaiilat said.
“The stories I’ve gotten, especially from women inmates, about the access to medical attention, seemed unsatisfactory, if not downright dangerous to their conditions,” Booker said.
On Wednesday afternoon, New York Congressman Jerrold Nadler made his way inside.
“The food is very sparse. They get up and have breakfast at 4 in the morning, lunch at maybe 12, dinner at 4, and very small portions, so it’s impossible, and very often, there are maggots in the food,” Nadler said.
