  • I’ve read a creepy pasta somewhere from this guy’s pov, that somehow discovered a computer at one of the businesses they took over as a contracted IT, think car wash or something, and they’ve ended up discovering a computer in a closet that was networked with other computers in the area to share CSAM and other smut. I forgot how the story ended as it was fairly long, but they were describing the technical non-sophistication of the whole network in great detail. The PCs were basically just networked windows xp workstations or something, without any sort of password protection on them or their shared folders.

  • No, the point here is that if you use the “smart” features, which includes running apps from their appstore, like Netflix or Disney+, it will not send the data. But if you connect your laptop via HDMI and then play Netflix in your browser, it will, because it’s not smart enough to recognize and differentiafe video and audio data coming in through that port. I don’t think it matters if it’s a DRM enabled browser or not. It should be acting as a second monitor only in those cases, nothing more.

Just like their search engine, making you scroll down further and potentially not even wanting you to leave their page, maps is trying to send you into the vicinity of more <insert big brand name who paid the most for ad space> physically so you can go into their store and tell them that you found them along a route suggestion.

I don’t think the above is true. At this point I’m just trying to give them ideas on how to enshittify it more.

  • I think the mice and keyboard requiring “Chrome” is actually due to WebHID. WebHID is only supported in Chromium browsers. Now here’s the fun part, this thread has VIA mentioned a couple times and even though VIA/QMK/ZMK are FOSS, the usevia.app website requires a, you guessed it, WebHID capable browser.

That said, don’t use Logitech keyboards. Sell it to a sucker on local and buy any of the above compatible keyboards instead. Drop CSTM, Luminkey, Keychron, Akko, QK NEO, CK Bakaneko, there’s probably couple more that are affordable and quality. Just don’t fall for GMMK, Ducky and other pseudo-gaming crap. Also visit !mechanicalkeyboards@lemmy.ml and ask questions.

Not sure about your trackball problem.
