AWD is really tricky because you want different levels of power to different wheels. Doing it with a transfer case is really tricky, and you have to deal with long shafts going all over the place.

On the other hand, with two smaller electric motors, you can stick them right by the wheels and adjust the power delivery with software. Since electric motors have like one moving part (exaggeration but essentially) they’re actually not that expensive compared to all the hardware you’d need to manage power delivery with one motor. And you get more control to fine tune with two.
