  • I think the thing that’s the most confusing about this is why did they wait??

"The timing is particularly baffling: Nintendo did not strike when the iron was hot and everyone was talking about Palworld and Pokémon, and at this late date, why bother? The greatest heights of Palworld’s success were clearly driven by the memetic catchiness of its Pokémon parody, now it’s just another survival crafting game with a stable enough core community—see also Valheim or Sons of the Forest. Palword has faded into the background, a brief curiosity overshadowed by 2024’s far more enduring megahit, Helldivers 2. Just in time for everyone to have largely forgotten about Palworld and moved on, Nintendo has swooped in to announce: “In case you’ve forgotten, they’re the little guy, and we are huge, awful bullies.”

Palworld has reportedly made nearly $500 million now (source - Simon Carless). Even if Nintendo win in some way won’t it cost them so much more to take Pocket Pair down now?

  • Thanks for that. I might give it another go. I have ADHD and I wonder if that also doesn’t help because remembering a lot of names and details is hard for me. My short term memory is really only reliable until I see any random shiny thing. I tried using the evidence board to track literally everything I saw but it quickly became way too ovewhelming. I’ll give it another go though I think.

  • I really, really wanted to like this game. I love the look and feel of it so much but I just needed a clearer bit of hand holding to figure out what I was supposed to do. It’s so open ended and I could never really tell if I was on the right track. I love the idea of crawling through vents, interrogating people, sneaking about and putting together pieces of evidence but it was just too overwhelming for me. I wish there was a guide that just explained simply how you’re supposed to play but I haven’t found one yet.

  • I do wish we could have grown up discussions about climate change instead of this sort of thing. Governments and large industrial and commercial organisations are overwhelmingly more responsible for climate change than individuals like you and me. We individuals could not be more concerned about climate change already. Everyone wants to pollute less and live more sustainable lives. Our bins have multiplied and we learnt to comply with that. Plastic straws and bags went away and we learnt to comply with that. A lot of us are driving electric cars now or taking public transport and cycling wherever possible. Cities declared clean air zones so only the least polluting vehicles were allowed in them and we’re learning to comply with that. There’s all sorts of taxes on vehicles that pollute too and we’ve learnt to comply with that.

Meanwhile manufacturers pollute our rivers and skies and we’re all finding out how full of microplastics we are because of them too. How about that self righteous finger spending some more time pointing at them than at us eh? It’s just annoying how it’s always the end users who gets the blame for not doing enough about climate change.

And while I’m at it and no one is going to read this anyway how about someone with a brain actually spends some time on the branding side of “Climate Change”. It’s better than “Global Warming” because at least that reduced the amount of people denying there’s a problem every flipping winter but it’s still dumb. If you want people to understand the urgency of something you have to convey it in the language you use. Called it “Planet Cancer” or “Climate Apocalypse” or “Earth Burn”. Anything would be better than “Climate Change” which conveys about as much urgency as a hedge that needs trimming at some point.

(Edit: Looking at the guidelines for this magazine I can see how this post may be a little too negative. If it is I totally understand it getting removed.)

  • The optimist in me says yay 🎉, but the cynic in me worries that this is just Labour shaking a potential carrot at us just before announcing what is reportedly about to be the most savage tax hiking budget in recent history. They were originally going to do it in a couple of weeks on the 13th of Sept but recently pushed the announcement back to the 30th of October just before Halloween.

It feels like they know it’s going to piss everyone off, so they want more time to promise some sunshine 🌞 and rainbows 🌈 stuff first. Also, reading through that article it already sounds like there’s going to be plenty of wiggle room for businesses to make sure they get their pound of flesh by squeezing 5 day into 4 from workers or outright use the “not reasonably feasible” exemption if the definitions are vague in any way.

I hope I’m wrong, but ironically it’s the last few years of Labour really ramping up how aggressively they picked apart everything the Tories were doing that’s made me so cynical of all politicians. 🤨

  • For me it’s coffee + environment. If I’m just at home chilling then the effect of drinking coffee is very mild. If I’m at a business networking event, for example, it can really trigger my hyper behaviours. I get extremely enthusiastic, creative and happy.

By the way, one of these business networking meetings I go to is exclusively for business owners with ADHD and I can’t tell you how much fun that is!

It’s basically 15 people happily talking over each other and not taking it personally and 5 or 6 who didn’t turn up because they thought it was another day. We have one neurotypical person there to try and tether the ballons that we are down into some sort of coherent group but it is wonderfully chaotic :)
