Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•American Drivers Think Speeding Is Okay Because Everyone Else Is Doing ItEnglish
14·3 days agoLet’s it happen? I regularly see the police where I live do the kinds of things they pull people over for; speeding, rolling stops, distracted driving, failure to signal etc.
Tough to maintain credibility when those charged with enforcement don’t follow the rules either.

1·3 days agoNot really, no.
Let’s say your name is John and for 200+ years everybody called you John. Then, along came a person we’ll call Captain Kiddiefucker.
Now Captain Kiddiefucker is a moron who wields significant power and directs everyone who’s too chickenshit to stand up to him that they should start calling you Guy.
Your name is still John, except now you have the advantage of easily recognizing Captain Kiddiefucker and his cult of pedophiles and idiots because they’ll all call you Guy.
That’s basically what this EO does.

1·4 days agoNo, it doesn’t, but I don’t really understand your point.
Agency generally means the capacity of a living being to act independently, make choices, and influence their environment.
A minor child has little agency to begin with in an abuse situation and indifference of the legal system strips away even that little bit.

1·4 days agoDoes it really? Sure seems like the highest court in the land disagrees.
And before you start arguing that’s only been under Trump go all the way back to Dred Scott v. Sandford, which denied citizenship to African Americans, and Plessy v. Ferguson, which upheld racial segregation under the “separate but equal” doctrine.
Both of those are great examples of SCOTUS ruling in opposition to the Constitution.
The wealthiest person in America in the 1950s was JP Getty.
His worth was about $1 billion. Which would equate to $13.86 billion today.
- There were way more deductions available. Basically, nobody ever paid any taxes at such a high rate.
Ok, maybe, I’d be interested in seeing a source on this, but what qualified them for those deductions? Dumping huge sums of money back into the country and the community? There was a time the wealthy built libraries and parks and voluntarily gave some back.
- The primary reason for the post-war “golden age” that MAGA waxes nostalgia about is because almost the entire manufacturing sector of most European countries was wiped out. By comparison, the US was almost fully intact, and had a massive new base of workers trained in manufacturing. We went from a nation of farmers to a nation of city-dwelling industrialists almost overnight.
Not at all accurate. Yes, much manufacturing has left because it’s cheaper to off shore it to developing nations, but America isn’t less prosperous now. That prosperity has just been consolidated to the top 1% more and more.
