In the US, at least, usually if you’re asked about your ethnicity (say when you’re doing the common app for colleges) it means that you are at least a quarter (I think, maybe it’s an eighth) of whatever the ethnicity is. So for example, my dad was a Hispanic immigrant, which makes me 50% and therefore ethnically Hispanic despite living in the US my whole life. Honestly, I don’t have much in common culturally with Hispanic people who grew up in a Hispanic country, however I have a fair bit in common with other Hispanic kids who grew up in the US, distanced from our parent’s culture. Sure the Wikipedia definition may say that that’s just one way the word ethnicity is used, but if you just go ask people “hey what’s your ethnicity” aside from very likely being confused why you’re asking, they’ll likely answer something like hispanic or Asian or whatever

I think culture is the better word to use instead of ethnicity in this case. Like others have said though, the internet is such a big place, that it’s not very descriptive to say your culture is internet culture. Even in your original comment, you had to clarify that you’re referring to the western/english side of the internet, and even that can be broken down further. Do you primarily use TikTok or Reddit? Instagram or Facebook? Do you collect memes or read fanfics? Do you play video games or watch craft how-to videos? The internet is vast and obviously you have more in common with the people and content you find on the internet because the whole point of the internet is to be able to find people like you. But there’s a whole bunch of other people out there using the internet that have nothing in common with you, like for example, your neighbors. It’s not wrong for you to say it, it’s just not particularly descriptive without a bunch of extra info

Yeah it’s really annoying that people have taken introvert to mean “ultra shy anxious person who hates talking to people” and extroverts to be either “everyone else” or “walks into a room and instantly is friends with everyone, has all their phone numbers, and just finished planning their 5 years of friendship party with them all.” Because people forget that it just differentiates how you recharge your social battery, they often forget that extroverts with social anxiety can and do exist. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of “introverts” are actually just socially anxious extroverts that are suffering bc they don’t really part of why they feel so shit is bc they want to socialize more

There’s a Midwest focused instance and I wouldn’t call that division. They’re not trying to exclude East and west coasters. They don’t hate southerners. It’s just similar people gathering to talk about the things they have in common, which in this instance are midwesterner things. It’s the same for women. It’d be nice to have a place to talk about things that women have in common and experience that men don’t. If it was anything like the 2XChromosomes subreddit then men wouldn’t be banned, and plenty of men comment, it’s just that the topic of conversation focuses on women and women’s experiences. Having a place for people, especially women, to talk about women’s issues and experiences isn’t anymore divisive than having a midwestern instance or a European instance. And it would be a good place for men to look into to learn more about what life is like as a woman. If men feel they don’t have a place to talk about men’s problems, then they should also make an instance specifically for talking about men’s experiences

So, I’ll be honest, I don’t understand most of the technical stuff about lemmy. I just know it’s open source, no ads/corpos, and all the individual lemmys can interact with each other like how emails can send emails between gmail and yahoo. But what does defederate actually mean? Like how does it change things? Does it mean that people with the @lemmy.one can’t see the privacy instance anymore? And they have to change their account?

Sounds like I have a pretty similar office job and I used to have similar problems with the exhaustion. There’s a few things that really helped I think. The first was to be more active at work. Obviously there’s a limit to what you can do, but don’t pass up any opportunity to get up, walk around, and stretch your legs. If you can take a break/lunch outside then do that. If you have some days where you don’t have too much work to do and it kinda feels like you’re just sitting there with no sense of time, or you’re just watching videos to pass the time, try to find something to do instead. Pick up any trash/misplaced things around the office, reorganize files, have a chat with co workers. This all helps to prevent the exhaustion, I’ve found. Then, when I’m out of work, I try to have non-gaming things to do. Like family dinners on fridays. This helps me feel like I do more than just sit behind a desk all day every day, and it makes it feel like more of a treat when I do sit down to game. I don’t know if these will work for you, but they’re worth a shot if you haven’t tried them I guess

I’ve been seriously considering getting the anbernic sp but I know nothing about Linux (interested in Linux, hence being here, but not a tech person so), and very little about emulation honestly. Do you have any recommendations or advice for beginners? I’ve tried reading guides that say they’re for beginners but then they talk about knulli and stuff and I get real confused

My big problems with AI are the climate cost and the unethical way that a lot of these models have been trained. If they can fix those, then yeah I don’t have an issue with people using it when it’s appropriate but currently lots of people are using it out of sheer laziness. If corpos are just using it to badly replace workers and kids are using it instead of learning how to write a fucking paragraph properly, then yeah, I’ll hate on AI
