  • I work in a repair shop and we will do head gaskets, a lot of others won’t though because liability, in some rare cases the repair fails, we have had a few fail, and it turns out the issue is a hidden crack or something, of course then the customer is angry and it all goes sour because we don’t have xray vision and sending out for crack and pressure testing is expensive.

    This is why they don’t want to get involved, selling an engine with a warranty protects them.

















  • The pro workshop solution would be replace gearbox and bearing, the at home best cheap solution would be strip box and replace shaft and seals and bearing, the at home machinist solution would be remove shaft, weld damage and lathe back to size, new bearing and gearbox seals.

    The utter bodger would not strip the box at all, but build up the damage with a welder, put the gearbox into top gear and have a mate spin the box from the output whilst you angle grind the weld back to an approximate diameter that fits a new spigot bearing, of course I have never done this. :-)
