It still hurts that Arsenal sold SZCZ! What a quality keeper he is!
Am I the only one who thinks clean sheets are more of an indication of great defensive play rather than great goalkeeping ability?
I think it’s a bit of both, even a single great save can result in a clean sheet. Kobel for time and again has saved our asses so has MATS for barca in last couple of seasons.
Let me turn that thought around: Am I the only one who thinks goals scored are more of an indication of great offensive play rather than great scoring ability?
Let’s say a keeper faces like 10 shots a game and has to save every single one to keep his clean sheet. A striker can bottle 9 chances and just poach in one shot to score.
Case in point Onana last year
There should be another measurement than played games. As you said, a GK with bad players upfront is likely to be more in the middle of the action, hence potentially gets beaten more often.
I would love to have more context available from such stats, like how many shots on target, saves made in general or as others mentioned saved penalties.
Ucl final of 2022 is probably the biggest example of how sometimes it’s the defence, sometimes the keeper single handedly and sometimes a combination of both
My mate is a Liverpool fan and that final still gives him PTSD to this day
I have never been in more disbelief after that final, what a performance by Courtois that day
True but Curtois carries that ucl win from the groups to the final, his saves were crazy and impressive
Yeah it really depends on the specific game and the keeper. Some keepers also kind of run the defense and some dont.
To some extent yes but one of Bulka’s clean sheets comes from saving two penalties so I’d say that one’s on him.
Damn bulka is still relevant after all those years good for him
Maybe someday in the far future Bayern will accept that, while there defence is great on the paper, it isn’t that great on the pitch especially in tight games.
Sommer is and was always a great keeper and he was blamed by there fanbase for the bad season in parts while he had a really shaky defence.
As for Ter Stegen, Barca stands so solid with its injury problems and its offensive style, Xavi is doing a great job!
We’re playing in the most offensive top league in the world. Our defensive record per game tends to look better in the CL.
Sommer was never the problem for Bayern. He is nowhere even close to as good as Neuer though so it was always going to be an issue in comparison. Even currently, only the idiots are blaming Sven for the draws. If Neuer looks like shit after he comes back in the next couple weeks, then Bayern will look kinda stupid not keeping Sommer or going for a top keeper. The defense is generally fine, they are just vulnerable to the counter because the Bayern midfield doesn’t do nearly enough defensive work. Hence why Tuchel wanted and still wants a 6.
This. The only reason Sommer left was because he wasn’t willing to sit on the bench when Neuer came back, especially with the Euros next year.
If Neuer had retired we’d have 100% kept Sommer on as the #1 and probably signed Kobel next summer.
Yes and no this seaosn, we got a lot of clean sheets but also conceded 10 goals in those other 5 games (and that weren’t really high caliber opponents either)…
Last season was def better defensively but that’s the trade off you have to accept when playing Cancelo instead of Kounde at RB
It’s not really Cancelo’s fault either. Xavi has him playing as a 4th midfielder for the most part. This has resulted in a much more dynamic attack at the cost of being more vulnerable to counter attacks.
Yeah it’s a calculated trade off
Yup, I fully expected this to happen as well…
last seaosn we were more organized in general but we also massively overperformed our xg against due to a perfect storm of Ter Stegen being great, bad finishing from opponents, luck… that was never sustainable, we reverted back to „normality“ now
Ist Juan Bernat - always
Who in their right mind thinks our defence is great?
De Ligt, Upa, Kim , Maz and Davies are a great defense on paper.
I cannot trust Upa anymore. I get anxiety whenever he has the ball.
Yeah, but if you ever hear someone say “man i sure love our defensive stability at Bayern” or anything like that you’re obviously in the psych ward
Yea but that’s more on our lack of a defensive midfield. Our CBs are great, we are only fucked when maz cannot play and we have to field Laimer as RB.
Great keeper, yes, but bad with the ball at his feet
That isn’t a big problem at inter, but it is at bayern
that’s such fucking bullshit, Inter has been heavily building from the back for years. Onana was a big loss not because he was a generational shot stopper for us, but because we were basically immune to the press when he was playing.
Don’t try to reason with Bayern fans. They’re a reactionary bunch. They know they would have been far better off with Sommer, but they’ll never admit it.
Don’t think any Bayern fan is gonna claim that Ulreich is better than Sommer. Obviously he is a good keeper, who saved us a bunch. We just counted on Neuer being back sooner and getting a bag for Sommer as well.
I, for one, didn’t like the Sommer transfer all that much because it seemed like a great opportunity to try and find a young, promising keeper, who could eventually be Neuer’s replacement. But instead we went with the short-term option when Nubel scuffed us off.
If were are highlighting goalkeepers that were sold by Bayern then Nübel deserves more praise right now. He’s on +1.43 goals prevented in league play. Sommer on +0.30.
Maybe someday in the far future Bayern will accept that
Nagelsmann was aware
The names/badges Dimitrievski and Skorupski are mixed up.
yea. i almost thought that dimitrievski moved on deadline day or sth lol.
Szczesny at 5 in 7 seems really good.
Don’t jinx us.
I can’t believe we bought him for only 17 millions.
pretty insane that Maignan and Szczesny cost a combined 33.4 million euros
3 Polish keepers on this list. Nice
You know when the Poles are in the thread because their usernames always look like a daedric summoning ritual.
Polish school of goalkeepers strikes again
dam was expecting onana to top the list
ligue 1 isnt a top 5 league
This is true from the perspective of ‘performance of teams in European competitions in the last 5 years’ but there are other factors that impact the inclusion or exclusion of leagues in statistics. France is a top 5 league in revenue for example, which is a fairly good proxy to measure how many people follow the league and would therefore be interested in hearing stats about it.
I personally would like all stats to include the top 7 leagues but it gets tiring to see people pretend not to understand why Ligue 1 is chosen as the 5th league ahead of Eredivisie or Primeira Liga.
No one actually thinks the Eredivisie is better than Ligue 1, it’s just funny to make fun of the French.
Nice, three Polish goalkeepers
Nr. 1 and 2 former Gladbach keepers. So proud of them
Gladbach bildet aus
The ordering is so annoying! Ter Stegen should be too, poor third… more games with the same clean sheets…
Nick Pope!
Nick Pope
Nick Pope
I feel like a broken record but France is not top5 anymore
Yup. Benitez with 9 games and 6 clean sheets for PSV.
