Teams found out the “inverted fullback” tactics. Chelsea had their 442 with the two forwards screen Zinchenko and Jorginho and we had no access to central zones. We’ve seen Rice step out of the block to receive the ball either from CB positions or from wide areas multiple times already this season because we have no space in the middle.

I don’t like how we play at the moment. We’re very slow and we don’t create enough chances. Rewatch the Trossard goal. Havertz makes an underlapping run, White makes and overlapping run, Saka is left 1v1, beats his man and can whip a beautiful ball. We need more of this, and on the other side of the pitch too.

Not sure I agree with this. I think Rice steps out of the block because he’s not (yet) comfortable receiving the ball back-to-goal/on the half-turn like Partey is. It’s not something he was tasked with at West Ham.

‘Finding out’ is separate from actually stopping it. Poch nailed the set up but they still needed an awful lot of things to go their way to get the result that they wanted.

Chelsea also didn’t play a 442, they played a 433. Their front three were compact creating a 6-man box with their midfield which was the goal to mitigate our central progression. It worked for sure but we allowed it to work by being abject in possession. If we were anywhere close to our usual level it would have been much more difficult. Also doesn’t help that both Martinelli and Saka weren’t their usual level which is what Poch probably banked on by leaving their fullbacks isolated all game.

Arteta is trying to emulate Pep’s 3-2-5. We just don’t have the personnel to do it effectively.

We’ve been playing with a 2-3-5 or 3-2-5 build up structure for about 3 seasons now.

really? we played in a 2-3-5 or 3-2-5 with Auba and Lacazette in our side?

we were in a classic 4-3-3 last year to begin with overlaping full backs on both sides. we didn’t begin inverting Zinchenko in earnest until the final 3rd of our season.

Um, yes.. This is from last season but it includes a diagram of our set up from the season before. The build up was 3-2-5.
