I’ve never believed we were seriously interested in Toney. It’s always felt like all the smoke has come from the player’s camp, so I find it funny there’s been constant talk about it.

I don’t think it will really matter whether Toney’s better than Eddie. It’s not the right comparison, in my opinion. For the money, we should be asking if he’s better than Jesus–or if he is on the cusp of being better.

We’ve spent a lot of money recently, and we’ve needed to, but we’re Arsenal not Manchester United or Man City or Chelsea. I can’t imagine we’re spending Toney money on a 28yo striker in the summer, much less in the January window.

      He’s a different profile.

Same way Rice is a different type of 6, and not head and shoulders above Partey

Yes, he’s a different profile. I don’t think we plan to sign a “plan B” CF for Toney money. I also don’t think Arteta wants to change the way we play to start Toney over Jesus. (He’s already signed someone who can change our physical profile in the box for particular situations when we might need it: Havertz.)

It’s hard for me to see Toney as competition for Jesus–which is what you’d want–but it’s comparison I think people should be making.

Is he a different profile? He’s a center forward whose game is based around holdup play, physicality, and defensive intensity, and his record from open play suggests he is not a particularly good finisher when the ball falls to him in the box.

Sounds like he’s a pretty similar profile, which explains why we would be interested but not at £70 million.

He is a completely different profile despite having a hold up skill set lol, you’re confusing skills and profile

Please enlighten me on how he is a different profile then, since it doesn’t sound like he provides much different from what we already have other than being a bit bigger

We bought wright and Auba at 28 and we do either deal 100 times out of 100 over again. Toney will age 100x better than Auba due to playstyle and having way less miles on his body than his counterparts, similar to wrighty who we had absolutely no issue with longevity wise

Whether it’s the right player and other factors, those actually play into it, not acting like 28 is ancient (which he hasn’t even turned yet)

Yes, we are the Arsenal. And Toney is no Auba.

We also shifted Giroud, Coquelin, Theo and Alexis that window to do it.

I agree that Toney is not Auba but that doesn’t answer the common crap everyone talks about him being too old

I can’t speak for others, but I don’t think it’s that he’s simply too old, period. It’s the the money Brentford will want for him combined with the fact people see him as a back up/Eddie replacement/plan B signing on top of his age. It seems like a bad use of the money.

None of us can name a striker anywhere near his value for money in this market

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on likelihood and wisdom of Arsenal signing Toney. I’m fine with that.

We bought Wright back in the day when age curves weren’t as prevalent.

Look at how much Auba regressed after that new contract all to go on a free. Money flushed down the drain after that deal. He was worth the initial investment before that though
