I’m the OP, even in my grade sheet for defenders in yesterday’s DD, I only gave A+ to players who met these criteria

i don’t remember the timeline of the documentary but he’s been accused of having affairs for like 20 years at least. the big one that was sort of in the doc was his personal assistant or something like that. she went to the papers about it and it was a whole scandal and in the doc it was just framed in the wider context of media harassment. obvs it’s a beckham fluff piece so i don’t necessarily blame them for it but still. was definitely stage managed

Torreira was bang average for most of the season. Very overrated player at the time.

I thought he was average and overrated. Said it at the time.
Guendouzi? Give over. He was a decent young player at best, the rest was pure hype (which I do understand on one level: the club was in the doldrums and fans were looking for hope wherever they could find it). His signature move was dribbling into trouble then throwing himself to the ground. Comparing his impact to the genuinely elite performances we’re getting from Rice is just daft.
Guendouzi doesn’t cost 105mil pound mate. He was the spark of our team. Played almost every game. Cost little. That boosts the rating.
So he was a good value, decent young player that filled a gap in a poor team, and one we got cheap due to disciplinary problems that would later resurface for us. I’m not giving that A++ my dude.
Saying it is a poor team is disingenuous. We finished 5th with 71 points and reached EL final. That is far from a poor team. He was one of the best players of the team and come with cheap price , high performance and availability. First season rating would be A++.
We finished that league season with and xG difference per game of just +0.13, good for ninth in the league. We were a midtable team that went on a wildly flukey run of unbeaten games. As for the EL, cup runs always require some luck, they are not the best indicator of a team’s quality. That team was not good - results are not the whole story
You don’t get lucky over 38 games. You finished where you deserved at the end of the league. Top 5 team of the PL. that is more than a good team.
If you genuinely believe that then there’s not much more for us to discuss.
