Hello Swedish friends! I hope you’re all well (:
So, I’m a young Portuguese guy and I was wondering what Swedes should think of Portugal and the Portuguese. I did some research, but found almost nothing. So I decided to ask here.
I’m very curious to hear your answers! (:

I know very little of Portugal, to be honest. I have some vague idea of a large medieval battle in which Portugal established itself apart from what is now Spain. I know of your imperial times, and the spread of the language and culture, and the independence of those nations. I know you have good wine, but to be fair, I know very little.
But from what I’ve gathered, but only by second hand sources (a friend went to a festival in Portugal this summer) it seems like great people and a great place!

I was in Lisbon just this weekend. First time in Portugal. Beautiful city, friendly people, nice weather. That just about sums it up.

It’s not a judgement or anything. It’s just what I think and what I think a lot of swedes think too.
I’ve only met a handful of Portuguese people and they were all very pleasant (and one was so handsome I thought I was gay for a couple of hours.) But I also think that Portugal is kind of an “off” country that doesn’t really make a lot of noise in Europe.
You have good wine and that salted cod is very nice. But I wouldn’t really be able to say much more about Portugal, which I’m sure is a beautiful and interesting county full of lovely people (whose language isn’t quite spanish)

From my personal experience most Swedes know very little about Portugal and just assumes it’s sort of similar to Spain, but perhaps even poorer.

“Even poorer” 😂 I can confirm Portugal is poor, but Spain is not.

In comparison Spain is pretty poor tough

Southern Europe = Poor and chaotic in the Swedish mind. It dosen’t matter if it’s true or not, it’s how Swedes view the world.
When covid was spreading like a wildfire in northern Italy (which is more or less on a northern European level of development) and, unknown to everyone at the time, already had started to spread in Sweden, our top governmental epidemiologist basically said “oh, but that’s… like… Italy… you know (not a real developed functional state like Sweden, Denmark, Germany or the Netherlands)”.
Southern europeans are viewed as… well… maybe not outright lazy but at least ineffective.
I of course speak generally and not every Swede hold these views, but I would say that they are a part of our cultural understanding of the region.

Did you meant you resent that remark? Or do you actually look like that remark?

It’s a play on words.
The original saying is of course “I resent that remark” but in this case, I’m a swede that knows next to nothing about Portugal, hence I resemble that remark.

Actually I liked Portugal and the portoguese very much. I experienced it as that Portuguese and Swedish people are more similar than spanish\italian and Swedish people are. Maybe it’s a small-country thing? Idk

I spent a lot of time in your beautiful country. Sometimes i find the Portuguese to be arrogant and a bit non friendly. Not too service minded i feel like.
Lots of amazing people for sure, but mostly middle aged or older people.
But young men try to be very macho and aggressive, especially in the surfing community. I understand that many feel like me as a tourist are riding “their” waves on Portuguese beaches. But I would also like them to understand that I come from a country with basically zero amount of good wave patterns and nasty cold water.
Surfers are dick heads in general. So my analysis might be a bit unfair.

Yes, I understand what you’re saying. And don’t worry, all experiences are valid! Whether good or bad.
I hope you meet more friendly Portuguese people next time

The Portuguese people are warm and friendly. Much calmer and less choleric than their eastern neighbours. They love the ocean.
The only downside is that food with more than 4 ingredients is considered very advanced :)
In short: I tell everyone I know to visit Portugal. I have spent a lot of time there and I have nothing but good things to say. I have always been treated well. From the fanciest parts of Cascais to the half angolan suburbs of Lisboa.
And when it gets too hot, the Atlantic is always refreshing, whereas the Mediterranean is like swimming in vegetable soup.

I travel to Algarve at least once per year. I greatly prefer Portugal to Spain, the portuguese are far kinder.
