I was expecting not to receive my full pay rise this financial year regardless of meeting my performance plan because I haven’t been in this particular role for the full financial year… but I just got an email saying congratulations and that my pay rise is coming through on the next pay run along with backpay from July 1! Yay!!

    Sometimes things just work out.

It’s still technically a pay cut when looking at the cost of living/inflation increases but let’s try not to dwell… nobody is getting raises to meet those increases unless they’re changing jobs. It’s still progression! …yay!

Had an MRI this morning, first time. I knew it was going to be an uncomfortable experience but I wasn’t expecting to feel completely stoned afterwards. Had to sit in the car for 20 minutes before I felt capable of driving home and even now I still feel a bit spacey. Might have a nap.

Windows are being replaced with double glaze today, at 7.30am.

Also have a combination of medicine issues with a lil bit of food poisoning. Makes for my first sickday 🤦‍♀️

On the brightside: i can call workforce today to remove the hold on my payment. Apparently not going to the employment training for the last two days of it last week (bc I gained FT employment) means I’m a bad dole bludger and must be punished with even more poverty ugh 🙄

Another unseasonably warm morning, bringing with it both pleasure at the temperature and a sense of existential dread at the larger meaning of it all. I plan to work out my inner angst by raining destruction upon the leaf-curl ridden nectarine tree that’s never produced any fruit, and the gall wasp ridden lemon tree that is little more than a twig with leaves that constantly surprises me by the fact that it somehow manages to still be alive.

Unfortunately leaf curl is inevitable and can only be managed by spraying. If this isn’t a preference yeah I agree time to get rid of the tree and plant something more robust. As for the lemon tree, my recommendation is to ignore any and all advice that says to cut off the galls. Spent a few years cutting off galls from my lemon tree, and the poor thing could never recover because it was getting cut back too much. Left it totally alone for a couple of years, just fertilised, and it is now lush and heaving with fruit. It is also full of galls but that seems to have zero impact on its fruit producing ability. There is enough tree for both me and the wasps to share.

Leaf curl is nasty. I’ve had good results from Bordeaux mixture - which is copper sulfate based. My lemon saplings have had all their leaves chewed off by something, so I have moved the pots and sprayed them with soapy water. Will hose them off tonight if it hasn’t rained by then.

I am one of those people who hate chasing up money even though I have been owed it. The person I was dealing with is nice but they haven’t paid me for some work I did, so do you think a simple “Hey, how’s it going? I was wondering if you had a chance to talk to payroll/admin regarding the payment for [event] we discussed?” would be fine?

Yep it’s on them to feel bad about them not paying you, not you. That’s a very reasonable email. Can’t imagine how you could word it any nicer or gentler.

I always feel horrible when I owe people money, but I also feel horrible asking people for money. It sucks.

I don’t think that’s a bad thing to do though.

The prevailing theory for the use of eyepatches, in the case of piracy on the high seas and maritime combat, is that they will help preserve your “dark adapted vision”.

In such cases where you need to transition belowdecks you can maintain combat effectiveness in low light conditions.

Oh. I thought it might have been because you’ve accidentally poked an eye with your hook hand while swatting a fly.

sailors would sometimes lose an eye from ropes flicking up

they would also lose a lower limb from a rope accidently coiling around an ankle

ships are dangerous, the sails exert strong forces and anchors are very heavy

the dark adapted vision thing is probably because they used sextants for navigation and that meant looking at the sun

I freaking HATE when people use my full name when my email, contact details and profile are all my short name. Think calling someone Benjamin when their email signature and address are both just Ben. Its condescending as shit, and like some sort of power play or something.

I remember reading somewhere that Bartholomew is my name in some other language (like John, Jan, Ian, Sean etc are all the same name). It’s just occurred to me that I’ve just accepted this as a fact for decades without ever actually looking into whether it’s true.

So now I’m just gonna come out and say it: don’t call me Bartholomew. Thanks.

I feel so bad when I’m emailing people who don’t sign off but they have a name that can be shortened. Like a Joshua or something. I don’t want to seem rude by saying Josh, but I also know people who don’t like the long version of their name (I hate the short version of my name and I have another nickname that is popular with people who have the same name as me).

I kind of have an opposite feeling to this, I have a long first name that is frequently shortened, and I get terribly annoyed when I give it to people and they go straight in with “hey banana” instead of “hey bananafungus” like we’re old pals.

I give people at work the option, “Hey you dont have to be Samuel if you dont want to, you can just be Sam” so I know their preferred name by their signature.

    Introducing the BLOSSOM DAWG

Edit. It’s actually a pretty tasty tree. I thought it’d taste like grass but that was alright.

Look. It’s a limited edition. One of things where the food scientist goes 'hey, that’s a good idea" and then it mysteriously goes missing from the shelves a few weeks later.

Having been to Japan several times with their sakura flavoured things and sakura petals as garnish. I approve. Though not with that ghastly colour combination and that very chewy off tasting bolted coriander leaf.

Cherry blossom and coriander forest weird FLEX but okay:

    spoiler

Bees only get a few weeks to enjoy the cherry blossom. But it’s the first year both the coriander and cherry are flowering together which is new.

I forgot to buy cheese. Now I’m destined for a cheese-less Wednesday. This is the worst thing to happen to me all September.
