In 2014. In the Netherlands, the most bicycle safe country on the planet. After which the sentence was changed on appeal to four years in prison.
This sub is turning into ragebait for those who can’t bother to read articles or research.
That was more than 10 years ago. And also changed later. Fucking ragebait.
Would be interesting to know if the driver kept breaking laws afterwards
The motorist killed the toddler and her 67 and 64-year-old grandparents instantly when he went off the road at 75mph in a 50mph zone.
yeah, fuck you. you lost control while speeding and you killed people as a direct result.
straight to prison, do not pass go, loss of license for five years when you get out with mandatory training before relicensing, plus restitution to the family.
Honestly? If you get sentenced after having killed someone with a car, you should lose your license permanently.
And deserves to be in a cell with Big Beautiful Bill.
i hope people stay away from you
Y es, jecause rape is awesome now, apparently. At least you seem to think so
How about we don’t use rape as punishment
that’s prison. thats the punishment prison does. dont like it? change prison. but sending people to prison is that.
That’s fucking disgusting. Pain for more pain. Blood for the blood god. MORE MEAT FOR ME!!!
And now the father will get a harsher sentence than the killer?
Shoul’ve just waited and run her over with a car. 3 people gets you 120 hours, one surely only gives you 40
Obviously.
Should have thrown a car
but have a few drinks first, so he can get off.
Yeah, then he’d be fine, as long as he has insurance coverage and doesn’t flee the scene.
The killer got 15 months in jail. Impossible to imagine somebody would get 15 months of jail for throwing a chair at a judge. So, almost surely not.
Not until after the chair was thrown.
If that affects it at all, it decreases the punishment the father will get. If the ruling had immediately been 15 months, the throwing would have been much less justified and whatever punishment he gets would be therefore harsher.
Bummer that the judge didn’t take the chair square in the temple.
That’s really crazy! Only 120 hours community service?
Does anyone know the details of what actually happened?
edit
I didn’t see the link to what happened at first.
The motorist killed the toddler and her 67 and 64-year-old grandparents instantly when he went off the road at 75mph in a 50mph zone.
If I were the killer in that situation, not that I ever would be, I would actually want to be given a harsher sentence than that. Because what we just witnessed in that video is the creation of a vigilante. When the government won’t seek justice for people whose lives are completely ruined, those people will seek justice themselves, and I don’t want to receive that sort of justice.
The good thing is, as the second link in the post says, the driver eventually did get a jail sentence of over one year.
Still no where near long enough of a sentence.
It has the desired effect in the society. I don’t see much reason in spending money for a sentence harsher than what is needed to stop people from committing such crimes.
What nonsense are you basing that on?
15 months in a nasty, unairconditioned, Texas jail doesn’t stop people smoking weed. It’s certainly not enough of a deterrent.
That’s because it’s a nasty jail.
Over here in Finland prisons are about brainwashing, not about nastiness. They are relatively comfortable places, although being cut from your usual social circles does have its toll on the mind.
And we have among the lowest crime repeat rates in the world. The American penal system is built for retribution, accepting that that means more crime.
In Finland, and to a very little lower extent in the Netherlands, the penal system is primarily about stopping people from committing a crime again, even if that sometimes results in convictions that feel unfair to the victim.
When you leave a jail in USA, you have been conditioned into a very criminal way of thinking by the social conditions of the jail, and you are more likely to do crime than you were before the jail. And that’s fine because the point there is not to reduce crime but to have retribution for victims. Jails work extremely differently on this side of the pond, because they are about crime prevention.
15 monrhs in a Dutch jail do indeed have an effect.
And in any case: you talked about the effect of jail experience on repeating an offence. There’s, however, also the effect of the threat of jailtime generally preventing crimes. This has been researched in criminology and once the punishment is strong enough to hurt, increasing the punishment has a negligible preventive effect. A month in jail is such a strong punishment for smoking weed that if you’re smoking it anyway, you’re already doing that in the belief that you are able to completely avoid being caught. If you felt there’s a real risk for a month in jail, you wouldn’t smoke the joint at all. If the punishment was one day of prison, you might take the risk, but when it’s a month and you still commit the “heinous crime”, it shows you assume you cannot get caught.
And for those people it doesn’t matter whether the punishment for the crime is one month or two years of prison. Those who are to be deterred by the jailtime are deterred already at the lowest effective amount of jailtime, the rest won’t really change their behaviour because they assume they’re skilled enough to not be caught in the first place. The increased jail time does have an increased retributive effect, although I’m not sure who is getting the retribution in case of weed smoking… But I’m not living in USA, so I don’t really need to care of their logic there.
I’d say, you are correct, but nothing of that applies to US prisons, which is maybe why the discussion started, idk
I’m always a bit nervous when driving in cities that someone will jump in front of my car on purpose to get hit and scam me.
When I first saw this sentencing I wondered if that was what happened and it went wrong.
But clearly the system is just broken to only get such a small offense. I wonder if the defendant is related to someone powerful.
I think they finally fixed it in Denmark. That would be called hazardous driving and someone just got 4 years for killing someone due to it. The sentence was reduced since he showed remorse, could have gone all the way up to 10 years.
Er det under vanvidskørsel loven?
Det er flettet ind i straffeloven:
Tak for info 🫡
Ethics complaints, ethics complaints everywhere. This is beyond unacceptable.
The verdict is not only distasteful, but complicit in future tragedies.
Well the verdict has been appealed an the driver has been jailed now.
Calm down
Edit: This was meant for readers and commenters. I’m not telling the father in the video to calm down.
Could have done without the calm down. It doesn’t make right how the judge made such an absurd judgement the first go round. We will be calm if stupid ‘punishments’ aren’t dished out in the first place. And if people became more responsible in the death boxes on the roadways.
The new verdict is still unbelievably unjust. And even if it were acceptable, we should be just as pissed at this judge and the system.
Who are you telling to calm down? Surely not the father.
No I am talking to readers and the comments around me.
I’d obviously not have said that to the father.
I figured as much, just making sure. 😅 All good, my friend.
Ah, I see now how my comment can be read as a direct reply to the video :0
I’ll specify in an edit
In the Netherlands as well it’s fucking egregious. This is a country which places exceptionally high standards on driver behaviour and has, for decades, had a concerted effort to discourage car use full stop.
Easy to do in a minuscule, flat country.
Most of judges are merely tools nowadays, laws are compromised, we need to revolt
Well, in this case the next level of the court system did increase the sentence to over one year of jail. As should be.

Nothing in this video has anything to do with America…

So maybe comments about school shooters don’t belong on a thread about someone killing a child and their grandparents with a car…
This person’s implication was that somebody should shoot that judge.
(It’s not my opinion, but clearly I have to spell it out for you since you missed it.)
I get the implication. I am just fairly certain they didn’t watch the video or read the corresponding linked articles. So their comment makes them seem lazy or stupid since they couldn’t even be bothered to pay attention to what they commented on.
Shoehorning unrelated shit into this isn’t clever.
