I think the reason Amodei and his gang are suddenly interested in an AI slowdown has nothing to do with preserving humanity and everything to do with providing an excuse for a bailout when the bubble pops.

Trump is so confident in his election cheating that he doesn’t have to worry about popularity. The Iran war is perhaps the most unpopular war in American history (and that is saying a lot).
As for lending power, Trump could always switch on the printing presses and let inflation go wild (another unpopular thing that Trump views with indifference).
I think you are more optimistic about Trump’s susceptibility to the will of the voters.
I get it, but as much as he would like to be the president is not yet a dictator.
He might not care but the congress, house of reps might (as weak as they have been) i mean think of this he didnt get his way on intrest rates or money for said Irán war, and a bailout is not somthing a president can do on his own athority.
Again he has pushed these limits, but there are limits even in a real dictatorship there are limits.
