Should ban fucking Israelis. Don’t need terrorists and war criminals having free access to other countries. If they can prove they need asylum then they can follow the rules like everyone else.

Ban them from tourism, but allow immigration and the like. People who want to extract themselves from that toxic society should be allowed to, not to mention that it hurts Israel to lose the kind of skilled snd educated folks who’d make such a decision.

Edit: I want to note that this isn’t a hypothetical. Emigration from Israel has been climbing since 2023, and it has been disproportionately from the educated middle classes.

Finally a sensible opinion on the topic. We should welcome the people who oppose this insane shit their government does. Same for russians.

I applaud everyone who is willing to stand up to their government, but I also don’t expect them to risk their lives if they would rather move to a better place.

I don’t know why the concept of “trust but verify” is foreign to people.

Judge people by their actions, and they will tell you exactly who they are.

But only judge by actions, nothing else.

Will at least part of it is because the left is scared of the right and don’t want to do anything to give them political ammunition. So they decide to adopt to their policies to a certain extent in order to defend themselves. It never works of course because they are operating under the assumption that the opposition are at least somewhat rational.

Not to dilute your point in any way but immigration from non-western countries into Western countries is almost predominantly always highly educated individuals because they’re the only ones with the resources to get out.

I feel like they are beyond just letting them immigrate. They’ve let their regime run too long. They affect policy in western nations when they turn up. They should be outright banned and then let them claim refugee status if they want to get out. If they can’t prove they are war criminals then back they go.

Apparently the international British Union of Jews or something along those lines, has got all bent out of shape about this. Personally though I’ve got very little sympathy for them, if you are deliberately misconstruing anti-zionism as anti-semitism just because you want to be the victim, then you’re a terrible terrible person.

I really hope very soon our government finally admits there is a genocide occurring in Gaza and stops trying to delay what obviously must be done and stop our involvement in it. While calling out the West Bank settlers its also failed to blame the Israeli government directly for the atrocities being committed there and in Gaza.

There’s also the weird disconnect between saying the settlers need sanctioned and acknowledging that they too receive active aid from the Israeli government.

More than half – 52% – of 4,506 people polled approved of the ban, giving credence to an assumption Miliband made in his statement: “I do not believe that the British people want us supporting the occupation by accepting products from settlements in our shops and supermarkets,” he had ventured.

A breakdown showed 33% “completely” approved of the crackdown on illegal Israeli goods appearing on UK supermarket shelves, and a further 19% “somewhat” approved.

10% of adults polled indicated they “completely” disapproved with the move, while 7% “somewhat” disapproved with the legislation, forecast to be in place within six to nine months.

Around a third of respondents – 31% – said they did not know how they felt.

52% is what Novara media calls an “overwhelming majority”? And I thought they opposed Brexit!

Not surprising to see a high proportion of undecideds, but good that most people with an opinion are in favour.

It’s an overwhelming majority of people with an opinion, suggesting that if there was a referendum on the matter, where only the people who cared enough to show up and vote would count, it would be 75% in favour, which is an overwhelming majority. This 52% is not the same as the Brexit referendum’s 52%.

That was a flippant remark - I know it’s not the same. I still wouldn’t call it anything like an overwhelming majority. Excluding undecideds when there are so many is dishonest.

When deciding policy, political parties only care about the people who will vote based on that policy, or could be induced to vote based on that policy. Undecided voters might as well not exist (when they stay undecided). The normal definition of majority in politics is with undecideds excluded, and they’re typically only excluded by people dishonestly trying to downplay their opponents’ support. In local elections, people who are eligible to vote but stay home typically outnumber people who do vote, but council seats are still given to people who win a majority, even though it’s a tiny slice of the people eligible to vote who voted for them.

It’s fine if you’re just learning that this is the normal definition in political contexts just now, but you’re going to get into a lot of arguments if you use different definitions of words to the ones the people you’re communicating with are.

You’ve started talking about political parties deciding policy, which is one way of looking at news, but not the way I’m thinking about it. I am, after all, not a politician or advising any of them :)

It’s pretty obviously a political article and is explicitly making the case that Ed Milliband was right to make the policy change he did last week, so that’s the frame of reference the article’s expecting to be read from, and that means using the definitions of words that fit that frame of reference.

Those breakdowns seem to be pretty much to reflect the general divisions in UK society (certainly since 2016).

Do you know the age breakdowns?
