It’s a trick to drive engagement. Posts with a tame word like this censored gets posts from people who object to or are confused by the censorship. Then others start responding saying that the censorship makes sense or doesn’t undermine the basic point of the post. It doesn’t really matter on a site like lemmy, but on a Meta platform it increases clicks and therefore income.
Modern corporate internet speak is censored speech. Can’t upset advertisers. The worst thing about it is that people are starting to do it on their own unprompted, being good conditioned consumers.
If this is actually a thing (and noone has proven it is) then there is no fucking way that the same penalties don’t apply to “censored” content like this.
